Cal POV
The next time Sara comes around to check on Mare and replenish her blood supply, I go back up to my rooms in the hopes of maybe getting a bit more rest, or finding something to take my mind off of things.
When I get there and open the door, I am met with the sight of clothes and armor scattered across the room. The last time I was here was right after the battle.
I sigh at the sight and start making my way around the room, picking up items and putting them away as I go. The shirt and pants that I was wearing when we found Mare go straight into the garbage. They are torn and covered in blood, and even if I did somehow manage to get them clean, I don't think that I could ever wear them again without being reminded of what happened.
My armor I am not so careless with. I know how expensive this armor is and how hard it is to make, so I put it aside, and back in the suitcase it came out of.
Just when I think I am finished cleaning up, and that I might be able to get some rest, I see a stack of files and papers on the desk. They are the notes and paperwork from the meeting we were at before the battle started. The whole reason that we came here.
The lure of getting a good nap in my bed is tempting, but I am also intrigued by the paperwork on the desk. I haven't had the chance to look over them since the meeting, and they might hold a clue as to why the Lakelanders attacked, why they targeted Mare, and what their next move might be.
Eventually, curiosity gets the better of me, and I grab the papers off of the desk, bringing them back over to the bed to read them over.
I read almost every detail, analyzing it over and over in my brain, but there is nothing here to indicate why the Lakelanders did what they did, or what their plan is. I find myself getting more and more frustrated as I turn each page.
I thought that maybe if I was able to find something in here that could help us, I would be able to protect her better, and I wouldn't have to worry as much. I could make a game plan, and get one step ahead of the Lakelanders. But there is nothing.
Frustration and disappointment rage inside me, but before I have the chance to do anything about it, I hear a knock on the door.
My heart sinks. If someone came to find me here, then that only means one thing. Something happened to Mare.
I jump off the bed and make my way over to the door as quickly as I can, my anxiety fuelling my steps.
When I open the door, I barely have time to register who is outside it before I blurt out
"What happened, is Mare okay?"
Kilorn responds just as quickly. "Yeah, she's fine... the same as she was before. Daniel is with her now."
I take a deep breath as my anxiety lessons and relief overcomes me at Kilorn's words.
"Tramy and Gisa went to find some food, and we just wanted to come see how you were doing, or if you wanted anything," Kilorn explains.
We, I think, looking behind Kilorn to see who he was referring to. Farley and Bree stand behind him, Bree looking as moody as ever.
"Um, yeah, thanks," I reply, trying to get my bearings back in order after the scare that I just had.
