When Did We Get Here

Sweat was forming on my forehead as I continued whisking the eggs on the stove. It was still so hot here in August, and I was pretty sure something was up with the AC, I raised my head to look up at the microwave clock and see what time it was, great its already 8:00, I breathed in deeply before turning towards the stairs “are you guys ready, yet we have to get going” I yell up.

I turn back towards the eggs and continue cooking them until they're ready to serve. I hear my brother run down the stairs quickly “Ella do you know where I put my basketball shoes?” I glance at him “They're in the back, remember “

“Oh shit yeah I forgot, thanks El¨ I nod as I grab the pan and start plating the eggs and bacon, my stomach growls while doing this, probably because I haven't eaten a lot these days. I put my hand on my stomach as I put the pan back on the stove and turned it off. Turning around I start walking up the stairs “Guys breakfast is done “I say as I pass their room to get to mine, as I enter my dark room I hear them walking downstairs.

I walk into my closet before closing the door and start changing. I put on light blue baggy jeans and a white baby tea and threw my black zip-up over it. I'm already over school, and it's barely the first day. I hear a buzz from my desk and see that it is a text from Maddi saying “Are you almost ready to leave yet B?” I take a second to reply to her that I'm on my way. I love my friends, but it's going to be tiring to be around them again and having to pretend things are fine.

I put my phone in my pocket and grabbed my backpack as I was about to walk out of my room. I get a glance at myself from my mirror. Damn, my eye bags are even worse and my lips are chapped. I quickly get my little makeup bag my sister gave me and start fixing myself a bit by putting some lip gloss on and curling my eyelashes. I stare at myself for a second after “It doesn't matter”. I stare at my hair confused about how my hair should be. I fluff my overgrown bangs that sit on my forehead and brush my fingers through the rest of my hair that falls to the middle of my back deciding to leave it down. I honestly don't want to go to school and exist today. I close my eyes as I breathe out and in slowly trying to calm the anxiety that is rising in me.

My heart starts pounding harder. I blink harder and stand up quickly well a little too quickly I realize because my head gets lightheaded, I take one final breath before walking downstairs. it starts to get louder the closer I get. I see my 4 siblings sitting there talking and fighting at the same time. I sigh as I start hearing their conversation “I said I was sorry Jai" Jai looks at her and rolls his eyes “Sorry doesn't fix my broken glasses does it huh?” Liz stands up groaning "Ella bought you new ones already get over it”

They never stop fighting. I walk past them and grab the keys off the counter stuffing them in my pockets As I turn around I notice how the sun is shining more light I turn towards the clock and see that it's 8:20 now "Come on let's get going I say as Liz and Jai keep bickering with each other.

“Okay“, "Haiden said. He stands up and goes to the fridge to get his Gatorade. “Can you guys shut up already, you're being annoying" Isa says to them as she's staring into her small mirror fixing her lipstick and of course, this starts a whole other argument between the three. It was honestly starting to hurt my head.

"Guys," I say looking at them, they all go quiet and say at the same time “Sorry El” as they get up and start walking towards the front door. I turn back around to the cabinet and grab my vitamins, so I don't go fainting at school. I grab my water, put the vitamins in my mouth and swallow it.

I turn towards the back door and as I open it Obi our Australian shepherd dog rushes in after, stopping at my feet for pets I smile as I bend down and pet him before making my way towards the front door but as I pass the stairs I glance sideways my smile falling off my face when I see her with her hair covering most of her face she's in mostly black clothing.

She walks back into her room beside mine, closing it hard. I breathe in and out "Great she's back" I quickly turn back towards the front door to get away from the unsettled feeling that just rushed through me and finally I walk out of the house and lock the door behind me.

I walk towards the car my siblings are already in. It's silent for a second before I open the passenger door and sit down “Come on Hai we're going to be late!” Isa says irritatedly “I'm going“ he says nonchalantly as he starts the car.

“You guys have your schedules?” I say looking back at them as I put on my seatbelt. “Yeah,” they all say. “Ok“ I say. Within three minutes we were already at school getting out of the car.

We all walk towards the big double doors to our high school, "Bro I can't believe we're sophomores now '' Liz says while bumping into Isa "I know "Isa says while intertwining their elbows, so she doesn't fall with her heels. Seeing that makes me miss her. I pinch the side of my elbow to try and get away from that thought

We all start to split ways to walk to our different grade areas because that's how our school works. “Okay see you guys later” I say not looking at them, but I hear them say  “See ya” as they walk their way.

I start looking for my locker. I wonder where they are, The class is about to start in like 5 minutes. As I turn a corner I see them and smile a little since it's been so long since I've seen them.

Ellaa!! Maddi yells at me while rushing to me and hugging me “Girl you will not believe who's here now” she says I look at her confused “Who” I say really confused, but she just smirks at me before looking forward. I look ahead and see my other friends, but a guy is talking to Liam all I can see is his back.

Liam catches my eye and smiles before tapping the guy on the shoulder “Ella’s here” It's like everything is going in slow-mo he starts turning until he’s facing me and only then do I realize who it is, someone whom I didn't think id ever see again my eyes widen a little as I stand across from him and his eyes meet mine with such a calm feeling, from this close you can see the hazel in his eyes and the way they shine just like they did when we were younger he smiles kindly at me. It's the same smile I remember from all those years ago.

My eyebrows raise a bit, “Jace?”
