Warning - Drug Use
Duka spoke quietly with Tina in the back as Donnell drove them towards the mall. It was a last-ditch effort to salvage the date with Tina. If he could, Duka would travel back in time and kick his own ass for such a stupid idea.
Seriously. Introducing Tina to his hot mess of a mother? Maybe he was the one on crack. What world had that seemed like a good idea?
With a sigh, Duka rubbed his forehead and looked out the window. Something soft and greasy pressed against his cheek making him turn his head.
Tina pecked his lips and smiled. "Thanks for introducing me to your family."
He snorted. "It was a disaster."
"Not at all. I got to see where you come from. It made me feel special. Like...I'm closer to you."
A silly smile raised the corners of his lips and he kissed her back. "You are special to me."
Donnell died of secondhand embarrassment in the front. He asked Gio to do a search for him. There was no word up until he dropped the two lovesick fools off at the mall. Not to injure his eyes with their display of puppy love, he cash apped three hundred to his younger brother and took off.
Duka took his sweetheart around the mall and bought her several items from various stores and bought himself a new pair of boots while he was at it. Then they had a nice meal before her brother called and said he'd pick her up.
They were talking about school and upcoming projects when a red Lotus Evora roared up the winding path leading to the mall's main entrance. Other mall goers watched with interest as the heavily tinted car shifted and pulled smoothly up to the curb. The people waiting for rides or the bus chattered with unconcealed enthusiasm.
"What a flashy show off," Duka muttered.
Tina covered a giggle and kissed his cheek. "I gotta go."
His eyebrows raised as he looked for another car. "Go? Go where?"
She pointed to the car. "That flashy show off is my brother."
Oh shit. Duka stood up straight and straightened out his clothes. "I'll walk you over and greet your brother by the way."
She took his hand and gave it a squeeze. "No need. Next time." Releasing his hand, she gave a small wave and trotted over to the car.
Disappointed and slightly embarrassed, Duka watched her get into the car. The minute the door shut, there was a loud squeal and the car pealed away leaving a cloud of smoke and a burnt rubber smell in the air. The crowd was discussing the car and guessing what type of person was driving. A kid that looked like he was in middle school, approached Duka.
"Was that your girl that got in the car?"
Duka gave a half nod. "Yeah."
"That dude must have a lot of money."
Duka raised a brow.
The boy patted his shoulder. "Better get your bands up, my dude."
Damn kids. Think he wasn't trying? He'd love to roll out in something that sporty instead of relying on the bus or Uber. Duka took out his phone and called an Uber to go back.
It would be a lie if he said he didn't feel some type of way. That car, while not the most expensive or luxurious sports car, was amazing. He couldn't even fathom how long it would take for him to save up and buy one of those.
Irritation arose as he sat in the back of the Uber. He was so fucking poor he couldn't even think about owning a sports car. There were always places to spend money at home and there never seemed to be enough money to plug all the leaks. Too many mouths to feed. Not enough money.
Fuck this life.

The sun had set by the time he showed up to a yellow cape style home on a crowded street. He opened the chain-link fence and stepped into the yard. Cupping his hands around his mouth, he shouted up to one of the windows.
"Spaz!"
The curtain pushed to the side and the window creaked open. Spaz half leaned out the window and squinted. "Who the hell is it?"
"Get out that window shoutin'!"
Duka chuckled as he listened to Spaz's mother start cursing him out. "Open the door, foo!"
"I got your foo." Spaz ducked into the room. "Ma, open the door for Duka!"
The sound of several locks being undone sounded before the front door swung open. A short petite woman with dark hair greyed in the front, greeted Duka.
"You practically live here. Don't act like a stranger," she said with a smile. Duka kissed her cheek as he passed her and headed for the stairs.
"Make sure they do their homework," she called after him.
"Got it." Duka walked down the hall and entered the bedroom at the end. Spaz and Hector were sitting on the floor playing the PlayStation while Mitchell was at the desk on the computer. They greeted each other and Duka flopped on the bed and took out his phone.
Spaz tossed a lighter onto the bed. "Yo, light us up, Mitch."
"Alright."
Five minutes later, Duka waved the smoke clouds from in front of his face and let out a harsh cough. "Yo, what is this?"
Looking up with half drooped eyes, Spaz gave a lopsided smile. "I got a new plug."
Hector rubbed his throat. "My shit's on fire, son."
Mitchell threw a bottle of water at him. "Drink more water."
Confused, Hector turned the bottle around. "What's that got to do with anything?"
"You drink nothing but soda all day. That's why your throat hurts. You dehydrated."
Rolling his eyes, Hector took the cap off and took a long drink. "Whatever, mom."
Ever the polite one, Mitchell grabbed his crotch. "Suck it." He chuckled as the half empty bottle came flying at him followed by a pillow.
"Shut up, you virgin!" Hector pounced on Mitchell knocking him out of the chair. They landed on the floor and began wrestling.
Duka and Spaz burst into giggles as the two began to verbally spar at the same time. The stress of the day was completely gone. Duka fist pumped the air and cheered them on.
At least, in this moment, all was good.
