000. EMMELIAH WILLIAMS LOVED to dance. It was all she wanted to do. The spotlight on her face, her tutu twirling around her legs, the roses being thrown on stage afterwards. She dreamed that after high school, she would make her way into The Juilliard School. But of course, like every dream, it was crushed. Her father didn't want Emmeliah to go to Juilliard. his dream was for his only daughter to find a good (and by good he meant rich) husband, and give that husband children. That was what he thought was best for her. News flash: it wasn't.
EMMELIAH'S MOTHER COULDN'T care less what her husband thought, so she signed her daughter up for lessons. Emmeliah had never been happier. Those lessons were her first step to the performing arts school of her dreams. The best thing, her father had no idea about it.
THEN THAT ALL changed on the second of August, 1959, when her father came home from work just an hour earlier. It was a regular Thursday afternoon. Emmeliah had ballet lessons at seven p.m., as usual, that would end at eight-thirty. It was lucky that her father finished work at nine. But that one Thursday evening, Emmeliah wasn't so lucky. The second she walked through that front door, she knew she was in deep shit. There her father was, sitting on the couch. He looked up, took one look at her pointe shoes tied around her bag strap, and less than a week later, she was on a plane to Vermont.
SHE THOUGHT AT first her new school would be awful. And she was right. For about two hours. But then things started to look up.
