"What do you think is happening? You know, with the King giving us a curfew." I ask Aleksander as we edge closer to our homes.

"I thought we talked about this earlier, he says there is something dark out there." He glances over, his warm brown eyes, like a comforting hug with every blink.

"You know what I mean, Alek. You don't think he's after grisha again do you?" I ask softly. The King has always seen grisha as the enemy. Not an ally to work alongside, even if we could support within the kingdom's army. Instead we would be imprisoned within our own homes, or worse if our gifts were caught.

"He's always after grisha, Eudora. Which is why, you and I" He stops us, cupping my cheeks in his hands, "we need to gain control of what we are capable of. Together you and I could change the world for grisha alike. We could be the change."

A soft giggle leaves my lips. "You really think we, you and I, two kids from Ravka would be able to change the world?"

"Why not try?"

"Aleksander, we're not even like other grisha. Our gifts aren't beneficial, they would scare people."

"How are you so sure of that?" He asks brushing his thumb against my jaw. "We could fight alongside the others, we could provide an advantage, shielding the others within the darkness so they are easily missed, it would help end this war amongst the other kingdoms."

"Maybe yours, but mine? Aleksander, I can't just walk out there and bring shadow creatures with me-"

"Eudora, listen to me. You'd have me by your side. You always will."

"It's not like its possible. Why entertain the thought." I sigh softly looking ahead of us. "We need to get home soon, I promised your mother I'd stop bringing her young prodigy home late."

He lets out a snicker. "First of all, nothing is impossible darling. And for that young prodigy, its because she to knows what you and I are capable of. We'd be unstoppable."

I don't reply this time, only hold his arm as we start walking again. He's been talking like this a lot as of recent. Always bringing up "power" or "ruling the world" as if it was something we could actually do. As if, we too would be respected. It wasn't close to being a reality for us. Not now, and I'm sure it would take a saint to change that.

More grisha were coming out of hiding. I wondered if that had something to do with it. But those grisha, they could help. Some could heal, others could fight with elements. I created something those grisha would destroy. How would I be of any help? Why would I want to be feared?

Aleksander once told me about his family line, how many before him carried this same gift of darkness, the beauty within the shadows. That's what Aleksander was, he was beautiful. In every definition of the word. He was destined for so much more than he was given to work with.

If only we were born differently, we could rule together. But, not like this. Not when a simple gift at birth affected the outcome of our worth, our chance at the life we were all destined.
