We're going to be late

We're going to be late. I thought to myself as I grabbed my backpack.

It's a Thursday morning and we have five minutes to leave home or we're going to miss our first block. We overslept for by an hour and have already missed breakfast. And if we miss first block then they're going to make us stay at school for one of our free blocks and I'm not doing that chile. Since we're seniors and we've taken most of our required classes they've given us two free periods instead of one.

My schedule consists of:

Block 1: AP Biology

Block 2: Honors English IIII

Block 3: Creative Writing

Block 4,5: Free Period(s)

Adonis and I share blocks one and two together and our free periods line up also. Even though we have different third blocks, we still have a thirty-minute lunch together (even though we don't eat it).

Zakariyya has his first four blocks and a free fifth block. So, Adonis and I normally eat on our first free period, then pick up Kari, feed him, and enjoy the rest of our day. But today we have to go to our six-week check-up. I'm now a month and a half along in my pregnancy and no one knows except Kairo and Adonis. I'm honestly just contemplating waiting until the baby is here to even tell my parents. But we're getting sidetracked. We'll get there in a minute.

I went into Kari's room to make sure he was up and ready. He's always the last person ready and I'm not having that today.

I knocked on his door and walked in before he could answer. He was in the process of putting his books and phone charger in his bookbag. Once he turned around, he grabbed his hoodie off of his bed and made his way out of the room. I could tell that he had been crying because his eyes were red and a little puffy. I'm honestly not good at these types of situations but he is my little brother.

"Kari, come back." I said, causing him to walk back into the room.

He came in the room and slumped back onto the bed.

"Yes?" he asked, almost sounding exhausted.

I'm not going to try and pry him of any information. I just want to make sure he's willing to actually go through his day. We don't need him getting in any type of trouble because teachers these days don't care that people are human and deal with emotions differently.

"You alright?" I asked

"I'm fine." He replied

"You sure? You don't want to just stay here?"

"I would if dad wouldn't start bitching about me missing school."

"Don't worry about dad. I'll have Kairo call the school."

"Can you stay with me?" He asked, voice slightly breaking.

Kari ever rarely asks anyone to stay with him. He's always been super distant since we were kids. So having him ask me to stay with him really made my heart break, because he must really be going through something serious right now.

"Yea, but we have to leave at one. I have an appointment." I replied.

He asked me to step out so that he could change his clothing.

I exited the room and went on my way to find Adonis. He was in the bathroom brushing his hair.

"Can you go to McDonalds and get us some food? We're not going to school today." I said as I leaned against the door frame.

"Whatever," he said as he made his way past me and out of the bathroom, "just text me what y'all want."

He made his way downstairs and I took out my phone to text both him and Kairo. After I made my way back into my bedroom, I changed into a Nike Tech suit so I wouldn't have to get dressed for the appointment, and then made my way back into my bed to rest until then.

I laid down and started scrolling through twitter just to pass time. I guess I had gotten lost in my phone because I didn't even notice Kari slip into my bed. I had only realized after I heard him ask for a blanket.

I rolled out of bed and got him a blanket from my closet then slipped back into bed. He wrapped himself in the blanket and rolled back over.

"You wanna talk about it?" I asked just to see if he'll budge.

"Do I really have a choice?" He replied dryly.

"It's honestly up to you. I just want to make sure your good."

"Well, honestly I'm not. But who cares?"

"I care Kari."

"Everyone says that, but no one actually means it."
