Hanna drove to the gas station in silence. Usually she always had music blasting and the windows down, but this time was different. The mounting anxiety in Hanna's chest was enough to make her feel like she was going to explode; she couldn't just sing her heart out this time. Parking her car, Hanna took a deep breath in and out before opening the car door and walking across the parking lot. The bell on the gas-station door trilled quietly as Hanna swung it open. Standing in the doorway, she scanned the aisles. Snacks, car oil... there. The blonde girl walked towards the aisle, the usual confidence in her stride completely gone. Hanna looked to her left, then her right, making sure nobody saw her pick the pregnancy test up off the shelf; she had purposefully driven to a gas station a few miles out of Rosewood, doing her best to make sure nobody would see her making this purchase.  She tried her best to cover the labels in her hands and quickly walked up towards the cash register.

"Just this, please." Hanna said quietly, placing it down. The cashier, a middle-aged woman, looked at her sympathetically, but Hanna avoided eye contact.

"Would you like a bag?" The cashier asked.

"Um, yes please." Hanna stammered. She was debating whether she should take the test in the gas station bathroom or go home, but she decided to take it at home. Her mother was out of town again, so she had the house to herself, and she'd rather be at home when she took the test because she knew she would probably break down. The cashier nodded.

"That'll be $8.50, please,"

Hanna fumbled in her wallet for the money and took the bag from the cashier quickly.

"Thank you," She said quickly before rushing out.

Hanna drove back to Rosewood as quickly as she could, not even paying attention to the beautiful sunset like she usually would. When she arrived back at her house, she ran straight to her bathroom. She didn't want to do this, but she knew she had to. Even though she knew deep down what the results of the test would be, she still needed confirmation, as much as she wanted to deny reality. Hanna pulled the box out of the plastic bag and opened it delicately. She read the instructions on the back.

"99% accurate results in 3 minutes," Hanna muttered. She took the cup by the bathroom sink and went to sit down on the toilet. After peeing in the cup, Hanna uncapped the lid of the pregnancy test, and, taking a deep breath, dipped it into the cup carefully. Her hands shook as she lifted it out and put the cap back on. She glanced at the time on her phone. 6:28pm. In three minutes, her whole world was either about to stay the exact same, or changed forever. She sat down on the toilet seat, her breathing quickening. She could feel the bile in her throat rising and her heart pounding. Thoughts were flying through Hanna's head at a mile a minute; telling her mother. Getting kicked out of her home. Telling her boyfriend. Caleb leaving. Getting kicked out of high school. Although Hanna didn't even know the results of the test yet, she was still expecting the worst, and she couldn't help but catastrophise. She anxiously looked at the time. 6:30pm... one more minute. Hanna stood up from the toilet and began pacing nervously across the tiled floor, wringing her hands out. She couldn't do this. How did this happen? Well, of course Hanna knew how it happened. But it didn't make sense. They'd been safe. They used protection. Why would this happen to her? A tear slipped down her cheek, and she didn't try to stop it.

"God, how slow can three minutes possibly go by?!" Hanna cried anxiously. She checked the time again. 6:31pm. It was time. Hanna stopped in front of the bathroom counter, where the small white stick lay face down on the marble countertop. Her hands trembled as she reached for the test. Picking it up in her red-painted nails, Hanna closed her eyes and turned it around. She opened them once more and looked. The test clattered back on the counter as Hanna slumped down on the wall behind her. Two lines. Those two lines changed the entire world. Hanna burst into tears, her head between her knees. Hanna Marin was pregnant. At seventeen. Her life was over.
