1 week later

Hanna awoke abruptly to the irritating blare of her alarm. Groaning, she stuffed her pillow over her face. She had taken the past week off school because of how bad her sickness had been, but she knew she had to go back today; she couldn't afford to miss any more school now when she'd be missing so much once the baby came. Rising from her bed slowly, Hanna put her palm to her belly, trying to imagine the tiny blueberry growing inside. It was hard to believe that in less than 8 months that tiny blueberry would be in her arms. Hanna strode over to her closet and stared at her clothes, trying to decide what to wear. She finally pulled out a denim jean skirt. It was unseasonably warm for autumn in Rosewood, and Hanna wanted to take advantage of her summer clothes before she got too big for them. Hanna pulled it on and began tugging at the button, attempting to fasten it around her midsection. She was dismayed to discover, however, that no matter how hard she pulled, the seams wouldn't meet.

No way my clothes don't fit already. I'm only around 7 weeks! It must've shrunk in the wash.

Hanna thought, pulling another jean skirt out of her closet and sliding it up her bare legs. Alas, though, this one was even tighter than the last. Hanna's brow furrowed as she stared at her bare stomach in the mirror. It was true, she was only 7 weeks, but her lower stomach was beginning to swell with a tiny bump. Hanna sighed. She was probably just bloated, she'd eaten more than usual the past few days. She turned back to her closet and decided on a stretchier pink maxi-skirt, pairing it with a floaty, pale blue blouse in an attempt to conceal her stomach. After pulling her hair back in a simple half-up half-down and throwing on a quick layer of makeup, Hanna ventured downstairs slowly, taking deep breaths to calm both her nausea and nerves. She couldn't help but wonder whether the news had gotten out, and she didn't want to face everyone's reactions if it did. She knew, of course, that her friends wouldn't say anything. She trusted them with her life. But A, on the other hand, would probably not miss the opportunity to mess up anything they could, so Hanna was worried.

"Hanna! How are you feeling?" Ashley asked, her blue eyes looking her daughter up and down quickly.

"Fine, I guess," Hanna responded. As good as you would expect to feel in your first trimester.

"There's some breakfast for you in the kitchen," Ashley called from the doorway as she tugged her heels on quickly and fastened her diamond earrings. "I have to get going. Oh, and I made an appointment for you with Dr. Richards for next week. It'll be your first ultrasound, so don't forget!"

Hanna nodded. "Thanks, Mom," she said, strolling over to the kitchen counter, where a fruit bowl was waiting. Ashley blew Hanna a kiss over her shoulder and slipped out the door. Hanna would have to go soon too, although she was dreading it. She shovelled the fruit down quickly and was about to rush upstairs to brush her teeth when a chirp from her phone stalled her in her steps. Hanna froze, squeezing her eyes shut tightly for a moment.

Please don't be A,

She prayed, opening her eyes and glancing at her phone screen. An exhale of relief escaped her lips. It was only Emily.

Han, are you coming today? We're worried about you.

The text read. Hanna smiled softly. She was so lucky to have friends like hers, especially Emily.

Yes, I'm coming. Miss you, Em. Do you think anybody knows anything?

Hanna responded, biting her lip anxiously.

I don't think so. I'm hoping A decides to stay out of this, at least for a while.

Emily wrote back. Hanna hoped so too. After brushing her teeth, she grabbed her purse and got in her car, her heartbeat loud in her chest as she made her way to Rosewood High.
