In French Marcel means hammer. Hammer is a symbol for strength. But for Marcel he was the very opposite of his name. He was very weak, he was on the edge of giving up, he was suicidal just like Bulles. But for Marcel his childhood was very delightful and bright. But school was what made him as weak as he is.
The bullies destroyed him, the teachers tormented him, and all of the other students and staff just stood there being useless bystanders. Marcel had no one. His parents worked all the time, even though they were fairly wealthily they never thought to come home and still at least an hour or two with poor Marcel. He always had the house to his self.
Of course his parents left money but for him but they never left time to speak to their son before they left in the morning to go to work. It was almost like he didn't parents. Marcel grew up thinking he was the problem. This was stage one for Marcel's hatred for himself.
