Act One Ch 2: Not Fine

"Why? Just why?"

Everyone had gathered in the lighthouse after I shared the news. "Narrate everything you've done today Shelby" Jimmy said pulling out a notepad. "Well I woke up, had a shower, some breakfast... I made a few potions then I went to Scott's to finish up a trade deal and Sausage was there too ... and I think I 'interrupted' them" I started. Everyone looked to Scott and Sausage for confirmation.

"Yeah, you looked very disturbed so sorry for that" Sausage said. Scott didn't say anything, he kept staring at Gem's dead body. "Scott, you alright?" Jimmy asked. "Hmm? Yeah I'm fine, what was the question?" he asked, his eyes still dead set on Gem's body. "Did Shelby come by to your place today?" Jimmy asked. "Yes she did, she interrupted Sausage and I" he answered.

"Continue". "So after Scott practically shoved me out, I decided to come over to Gem's cuz she'd invited me and Katherine for tea by 12 and I thought I'd be a little early" I continued. "Gem did invite us for tea" Katherine chipped in. "I took a little detour down a nearby cave because I thought I saw some sort of ore but I was wrong. I then finally arrived at the lighthouse and Gem was dead".

Sad murmurs followed and Jimmy mumbled me a thanks. Who would do this to nice ol' Gem? "Everyone can we have a moment of silence for our dear friend Gem?" Scott suddenly spoke up. Everyone was a bit surprised but obliged. Even Joey surprisingly.

"Okay everyone shoo, this is a crime scene now" Jimmy said. "Aren't we going to agree on a funeral date?" Scott asked. "How about the 20th?" Lizzie suggested. Everyone agreed to have a funeral on the 20th. "Okay then, we'll have the funeral on the 20th of September, now shoo".

We were all chased out of the lighthouse and everyone awkwardly dispersed. "Hey Shelby" Katherine called. "Hey Katherine" I said with a small smile. "You okay?" she asked. "I'll be fine when I find something to distract myself" I answered. Speaking of which... "Do you think we can catch up to Pix?" I asked. "If we run maybe, that man is fast even when just walking" Katherine joked. "I'm no good at running" I groaned. "I'll carry you then" she said.

... What?

She picked me up bridal style and started running stupid fast. "Katherinnneee!!" I cried. I tightened my grip around her neck but then got I worried that I was choking her and loosened my grip. After an eternity, I could see Pix walking up ahead with Oli. "PIX!!! PIX!!" I yelled.

They turned around and started walking towards us. Katherine dropped me and I had to catch my breath. "Why are you panting? You weren't the one running" Pix asked sarcastically. I stuck up a finger at him.

"Were you two holding hands?" Katherine teased. "Yeah, you jealous?" Oli drawled. "Hah as if". "Pix I wanted to tell you about this stuff I found in that cave I talked about" I spoke up, pulling out the ring and pearl necklace.

"Interesting" he said. He got a pouch for me to put the necklace and ring in. "There's a friggin' netherite axe down there" I added. "A netherite axe?" he asked. I nodded. "Interesting".

"Before Pix gets excited, how about have tea at my place?" Katherine suggested. "Oooh do you have crumpets?" Oli asked. "I think I do". "Why not?" Pix shrugged. "Let's go then".

She's trying to distract me. Katherine got my back as always.

The sun had starting setting as I arrived back home. Mud squelched beneath my feet. Another wanted poster was stuck on my door. I ripped it off and walked inside. I climbed up to my room and collapsed on my bed.

Tortoise scurried out from under my hat and hopped on my nightstand. "Oh Tortoise, I could've saved Gem" I groaned. "If I didn't get so distracted by those damn pieces of jewellery". Tortoise croaked loudly in response.

"But it IS my fault Tortoise". A loud crash and tumble came from outside. "What the-". I grabbed my wand and creeped down to the front door. "Whoever's out there, I'm warning you". No response came.

Gathering up the courage, I burst through the door. "SAUSAGE?!?!". He lay on the path, a pool of blood fast forming. "Shelby hey" he said casually. "HOW ARE YOU SO CALM?!?!" I yelled at him. "There's no reason to not be calm". How much blood had he lost already to be this delusional?! I quickly helped him up and into my house, which proved to be a pain as his legs refused to co-operate.

"Shelby I'm fine honestly" he said trying to stand up on his own and promptly falling face first into my desk. "Dude you are NOT alright" I said firmly. "Noooo I'm fineee". His speech was getting more slurred by the second. "No Sausage I already allowed one death to happen today, I'm not letting another, especially when you literally fell on my doorstep".

I grabbed a first aid book that I had never read in my life. "Chest injury, chest injury" I muttered. "Hehe I'm fineeeee" Sausage drawled. "No you're not!!! Now where are the bandages?!". I dashed upstairs to find my first aid kit.

Tortoise croaked at me. "Not now Tortoise". I slid back down the ladder to find Sausage just staring up the ceiling. "You're gonna be okay buddy" I assured him as I tried to clean the wound so I could bandage it.

"Sometimes when I close my eyes, I see faces... horrifying faces" Sausage said randomly. "Mhm". I'm starting to get scared. I finished up the bandages and awkwardly helped Sausage up the ladder... somehow, so I could put him in my bed.

"What happened dude?" I asked. "Nothing I'm fine" he shrugged off. I didn't prod any further, Sausage wasn't telling me something. "You know, I'm always here if you need to talk" I said. "Shelby... I'm fine" he said, his voice and tone now eerily serious. "Okay if you say so". Just something tells me you're not fine.
