I was sitting behind the fabulous Flynn on Whiskers, Tess' valiant feather mattress. Thunder was flashing through the skies, illuminating the battlefield below us. All hope seemed lost as the Greebles, under the human nuisance Kaos' orders, were knocking out the Swap Force and Woodburrowians left and right.
"Oh, Flynn," Tess begged. "will you not single-handedly free my village from the hands of that dastardly Kaos?"
Flynn let his gaze fall over the battleground, frowning in thought. "That may be too much, even for me." He looked at Tess and I in turn. "Tell you what, I'll let you bask in the glory of victory with me if you lend a hand. Tess," he pointed at the monsters' crude ships. "shoot them down. Stealth," he pointed at the village proper. "slice them apart." Lastly, he pointed at the front gates. "I'll take care of the stragglers."
We both eagerly did as he requested. I stepped off the chicken and let Flynn's enchilada spirit guide myself and my blades into the nearest Greeble. Its companions stared in shock as I cut each of them down, explosions from the ships accentuating every blow made in plain sight.
Our combined efforts resulted in the rest of them fleeing the scene, screaming for mercy. Tess and her walking feather mattress landed on the ground, and we shared a triumphant nod.
A battle cry rose from outside Woodburrow. I followed the voice, leaving Tess to check on the others.
There Flynn was, suplexing every Greeble, snapping their necks without breaking a sweat - not that he'd have an easy time doing because of the weather. I cheered at him, and he turned and began waving at me.
A monster sneaked behind him while I was admiring him. I called out, but it was too late. Its club slammed over his head, and he went handsomely cross-eyed.
...
"I've been to Woodburrow a few times," Stealth finished. "so I knew where the infirmary was. Rufus and I helped get you and the others here while Tess checked on the Chieftess-"
The cavern wall in front of me momentarily grew brighter, along with a blast of humid air. More footsteps on the stones, and the soft click of a shut door marked another person's arrival.
"And here she is!" Doofus exclaimed. "Tessa, how are things looking out on top?"
"The Greebles caused a lot of damage," the other fox said. "I checked where the Chieftess and her councilors were supposed to hide in case of attacks like this, and they are nowhere to be seen."
Everyone besides me gasped. A blue octopus pirate spoke up: "Kaos had trained them better than we thought." He nodded to a bronze spider cyborg. "Spy, can you figure out where they're heading?"
Spy shook his head wearily. "Didn't you hear Rufus? My body must recover from our fight before I can do that."
I tilted my head towards Stealth. "Psst. Why's the pirate so eager to get to work?"
She moved closer. "The Chieftess is the only one who can communicate with all four Ancient Elementals, Cloudbreak's guardians, at once."
"Ah," I nodded my understanding. "So if something were to happen to the four Ancients-"
"Elementals."
"Whatever. So if something were to happen to them, the Broken Cloud Islands would all be in danger or something?"
"Not danger per se. More like it'd be far more difficult to communicate with all four corners." I opened my mouth, but she waved her hand. "You can ask Spy about Cloudbreak's geography later."
