Chapter 2  pt. 1 : High Cloud Quintet 云上五骁

Third person's POV

The dark skies painted with stars, clouds unusually shy at this time of night. Ominous, soft winds blew through the small courtyard that belonged to the High Elder. The raven-haired man was seated, wisps of steam streaming out of the large teapot in front of him. His thumb and index finger curled around the piping hot teacup, gaze settled on his most cherished lotus pond.

A few cups across him in an orderly manner, scrolls of paper settled on one corner.

He didn't avert his gaze. The turquoise in his eyes were dull, it seemed hard for any to decipher what the Scion was thinking in that moment.

The time was still far too early, why was he seated alone? Even his attendants could not understand either.

They exchanged glances, stationed afar, yet close enough to see the ends of his long garments. When had their High Elder started this nightly routine?

While they wished to understand, they knew they were not in the position to pry. They only needed to ensure his safety and his loyalty.

Had it not been for their piercing stares, Dan Feng would perhaps had enjoyed his private time much more than usual.

He lifted his gaze, used to eyes on him, used to not having time for himself.

"..."

Dusk jade orbs softened at the familiar reflection of the Moon. He found himself relaxing, his shoulders lowering slightly. His vision blurred, easing into a daydream. He relished in the silence.

The moonlight never wavered, but his mind wandered freely.

Unchanging, unfazed, unsettling.

Yet also, unruly, uncontrollable, understanding.

It reminded him of a shade of azure he came across.

He huffed, how sudden. Of all things he could have thought of, he thought of her?

Was he so buried in his work that his mind had randomly decided to remind him of that small matter? Or perhaps it was her name that casually rang in his mind, akin to the white round sphere hanging in the sky. (Yue's name in chinese pronounciation is the same as the Moon.)

A small matter, he thinks, yet as he continued pondering, he could not find the reason for his reaction at that time.

He lifted his palm into his line of sight, slowly flipping it from side to side.

Could it have been a warning?

Could the blood in his veins that belonged to the Permanence shuddered at the contact of a mere human?

He blinked, staring at the back of his right hand.

From afar, it seemed as though Dan Feng was reaching upwards, with a disgruntled expression on his face. It was an action that was easily misunderstood, slanted eyebrows hung with lowered lips. He looked as if he was missing someone far away, and was reminiscing via the Moon in shared skies.
