Dinner was rough. Mom kept asking questions about Ivory, only receiving dismissive answers in response. I was happy when it was over and could finally breath. It wasn't just an allusion that dinner last forever. By the time we were finally dismissed it was already 10. Talia offered to borrow Ivory some clothes and were in her room now. Though I doubted picking out clothes took long, I knew Talia would keep Ivory in there as long as she could and get as much dirt from her as possible.
I let out a sigh and made my way into the bathroom. I had already changed into my pajamas. Flannel pants and an old Electric Light Orchestra t-shirt. I didn't listen to them much but they were okay.
Stepping into the small white room, I proceeded to do what I usually did before bed. I took out my contacts, put on my big frame glasses, and started brushing my teeth. Half way through the brushing my teeth, I was interrupted by an recently absent member of my family.
Leaning against the bathroom door frame was my older brother Ryland. Ryland was taller than me by a few inches, had short blonde hair, and hazel eyes. Though we were nothing alike he was my actual brother. Mom had had us a year apart. We used to get along when we were young. But as soon as he entered middle school he started to change into something I could only describe as a badass. And not in a good way. He gets detention a lot and fights nearly as much. I don't see him around the house much, he's usually off with bad influences or whoever he sees fit. Honestly I was surprised he even made it home today.
"Where'd you find that one at?" Ryland remarked, smirking. I hated the edge in his voice as he said 'that one'.
"Forget it Ryland. It has nothing to do with you." I said, spitting into the sink. Putting my toothbrush away, I made an attempt to walk past the taller male but quickly failed. Faster than I could react, Ryland grabbed my shoulders and slammed my body into the hallway wall. I let out a grunt, more from surprise than pain.
The blonde held me there at arms length, Hazel eyes burning holes into my own. I tried to reach out and pry his hand away but he was much stronger than me. I was trapped.
"Leave her alone, Alistair. Freaks like her only cause trouble." Ryland warned. I rolled my eyes. He was such a hypocrite. Calling her trouble when he probably been out stealing or doing drugs all day. I felt anger start to boil and pushed Ryland away roughly by his chest.
"Speak for yourself." I mumbled before walking away from him. Thankfully, he didn't follow me.
I entered my room and shut the door behind me, running an hand through my hair. I couldn't believe him. Being so rude to Ivory when she did nothing wrong. She's been through enough crap she doesn't need any of his. If anything he should be apologizing for being an suck ass brother.
I let out a sigh and turned to my room. I nearly jumped in surprise, seeing Ivory sitting on my bed looking at me. Slight embarrassment came over me upon realizing she saw me thinking to myself. I only prayed she didn't hear the conversation out in the hall.
"Hey. Your sleeping in here?" I asked. Talia, at dinner, had offered her room for Ivory to sleep in. Being as we were teenagers, I would have thought for sure she'd have chosen that. Guess I was wrong.
Looking down, Ivory nodded tentivaly.
"She talks a lot." She explained. I let out a small laugh and took a step into the room.
"Don't I know." I remembered vividly, towards the first day of school for Talia, withstanding an hour long ramble about the 'precious school people'. Little to say I knew exactly what Ivory was talking about.
Moving to the closet, I started pulling out blankets to make a bed on the floor. Being the gentleman I was, Ivory was going to get the bed. I didn't mind the floor anyway. It reminded me of a long long time ago when me and Ryland used to get along and build sheet forts all over our rooms. That only lasted for a few years though. Until he entered first grade and started making his own friends.
I turned and let the blankets fall to the ground. I was about to bend down and start sorting them out when I felt eyes on me again.
Looking up, I was met with a pair of stunning eyes. Ivory was looking at me again, more specifically my face, with a confused look on her own. At first I thought she didn't think she'd get the bed but then I realized the object in my face.
"What? The glasses? Kind of completes the whole nerd image don't you think. I usually just wear contacts but I take them out at night." I admitted, pushing the black frames back up to the bridge of my nose. Something surprising happened then. I couldn't tell if it was my imagination or actually there. But I swore I could have seen a smile twitch on Ivory's face.
My heart thumped an extra beat. It had been a while since I saw her smile. Not the obviously fake ones she wore at school when the idiots talked to her. But a real one.
Oddly, I got a sudden urge to try and see it.
An idea popped into my head and I took a step forward.
"Want to see my old pair?" I asked, smiling at the memory of them. Barely hesitating, the brunette nodded. I smiled. Taking another step forwards, I pulled open the nightstand drawer next to the bed and pulled out the horrid object. I had gotten them when I was first prescribed to wear glasses. I was seven and had no idea what I was doing.
Smiling, I took off my now glasses and put on the old. The reaction was immediate. A pretty closed mouth smile spread across Ivory's face. Her eyes brighten to a light green and filled with laughter. I couldn't help but chuckle myself. I knew I looked like probably the dorkiest person on earth.
The glasses were big multicolored squares. Throughout the rim, red was painted with lines of black to give the impressions of spiderwebs. But worst of all, up in the right corner, was a small spiderman figurine sitting. In all they looked like a pair of glasses you'd get at a spiderman convention or an amusement park prize. Why I still kept them through all these years though I never knew.
Taking them off, I put my new ones on, liking them a hundred times better. Ivory she was still smiling. It made me feel slightly accomplished seeing her smile for real. As if I managed to wipe away a little bad.
But what made me even more happy was when she reached over to my hand and took the glasses to put them on herself. Ivory's eyes squinted behind the glass, making a funny scrunched up look. I rolled my eyes at how dorky she looked. Kinda like a nerd. But a cute nerd.
