                                                                            Hayden's POV

I was afraid. Like, no joke. Not of spiders or the dark--I wish--but of Adam and what he would do when he caught us alone. I was at home, biting my nails like crazy while watching Spongebob with Jade. She really loved this show but, honestly, I thought it was a bunch of nonsense. I mean, really? A talking sponge? Who the hell comes up with this kind of crap? (Author's Note: No, I'm not dissing spongebob, I love that show, but this is a fiction story so...)

I rolled my eyes when Jade began laughing at something from the show and she looked over at me, my nails, then back up at me. She sat back on the couch and just sat there. Watching me with an emotionless expression. Which was odd for her because she was either bubbly half the time and shy the next. This was so unlike her. She's so cliché sometimes.

But what I did was stare back, my nail-biting habit stopped. When she noticed I stopped biting my nails, she cocked her head to the side, "Why were you doing that?" I gave her a wierd look, "What was I doing what?"

Jade narrowed her eyes at me and her mouth turned into an 'o' shape, "You know what I mean. You were biting your nails. You do that when you're agitated." Geez, for an eight year old, she sure was smart.

I raised an eyebrow at her, "Oh yeah? Well, you bite your tongue until it bleeds when you're nervous." Jade stuck her tongue out at me and focused her attention back to the T.V. I swear, one of these days she is going to drive me through the stake.

I sighed in relief but only got irritated when the doorbell went off. I heaved myself off the couch, remembering that mom and dad had gone to Aunt Melinda's funeral (she had been 89 and frankly, I was glad she was back to the dust because me and her had never gotten along.)

I rounded the corner and stepped into the hallway only to hear the bell go off again, a little more shriller this time. I gritted my teeth together, "Impatient much."

I opened the door to expect some kid selling cookies or something but was only pushed up to the wall, hot breath and angry eyes glaring back at me. Adam.

Fear raced up my body when he slammed the door shut and clutched my wrists together in a painful grip, "Fuckin' bitch, that's what you are." He hissed at me. My eyes darted fervently down the hallway, where it made a turn to the living room where my innocent little sister was, and back into Adam's cold eyes.

I licked my dry lips and tried to sound brave but it only came out weak and scared, "W-what a-are you d-doing here?" I whispered. Adam grabbed the collar of my shirt, pulled me back, and slammed me into the wall again. But harder this time. I felt myself beginning to shiver uncontrollably and Adam seemed to notice that so he slapped me across the face which made me yelp.

The T.V. volume went down a bit and I worried that Jade might see this. I didn't want her to. I didn't want anyone to ever know.

I hot, salty tears slide down my cheeks and I looked up at him through scared eyes. Adam let out a hard laugh, "You know why, bitch. It's because of that stupid arranged marriage thing and I want to end it. You hear me?" He spat.

I swallowed and nodded slowly only to have my heart stop when the T.V. turned off instantly. Making everything quiet. Adam noticed it to and that's when my fear was confirmed once I saw Jade's little eyes peek around the corner, landing on me then Adam. She stepped into the hallway, her face scared but angry at the same time, and she glared at Adam, "What did you do to my sister?" Her little voice said, breaking the silence.

Adam's cold eyes flashed into a fake innocence and he tried to take a step towards Jade but she stepped back. Well, on the up side, at least she knew he wasn't the perfect boy in the world anymore.
