Hayden's POV
I woke up surrounded by a bright light in a white room wearing one of those hospital gowns. A whole bunch of tube thingy's were sticking to my arms and some air tubes were in my nose, making it easier to breathe. I blinked a couple times to allow my eyes to adjust to the light when I noticed how much pain inflamed in both my stomach and right arm. I groaned and closed my eyes only to have them pop open when a soft voice entered the quiet room.
"Hayden?" It was almost a whisper but with desperation and sadness in it. It kinda broke my heart when I turned my head to see my mom staring at me through red, puffy, tear-filled eyes while her normal tanned face was pale.
I struggled to speak because of how dry my mouth was but eventually did it, "M-mom?" My voice sounded so weak I was surprised I was able to talk. It hurt a little but I was fine.
Mom's eyes lit up like a candle and she jumped out of the chair she's been sitting in and ran to the door to fling it open. She began to scream out the door, "She's awake!! Oh my goodness, she's awake!!! She's awake, come see!!" Mom ran back to my side and began to stroke some hair away from my face, tears spilling down her cheeks.
"Oh honey, how are you feeling? Do you feel okay? Are you thirsty? I could go get some water. Oh baby, I'm so glad you're awake!!" Mom burst into tears and I stared up at her, "Mom, I...I'm f-fine. Really." I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion. Why did it hurt so much just to talk?
Just then, two nurses, one blonde the other brunette, and came into the room. The blonde automatically came next to my bed and smiled down at me while the brunette nurse went over to calm my mom down.
"How you feeling, sweetie?" The blonde nurse asked me. She looked like she was about 25 or something and she was very pretty. I shrugged but winced when pain shot through my shoulder. The nurse--by looking at her nametag, learning her name was Amy--gave me an apologetic grin and gently touched my shoulder, "Yeah, you might want to be careful about using that shoulder, honey. It got pretty beaten up."
I must have looked confused because she explained it, "Well, after the police pried that boy off of you, what's his name...Adam! Yes Adam, after they took him off of you, they found that he'd beaten you up pretty bad. Dug a knife pretty deep into your arm and in your stomach. S'gonna leave some pretty nasty scars there. But, the police also stated that they found him on top of you beating you like crazy and had a good grip on your shoulder, knocking it back and forth into the ground. He popped a bone there because of the grip he had on you. That's why it hurts--"
Amy was interrupted by the cry of my mom, "Oh Hayden, sweetheart, I'm so sorry we didn't know!! Why didn't you tell us he beat you? Oh why, baby?! I'm such a bad parent! I should have known! I should have known...!!" Mom burst into more tears and the other nurse--named Jenny--had to calm her down and have her sit in the chair.
Amy looked stricken when she looked back at me, "Hayden, we also found some shocking discoveries on the rest of your body, hun." I swallowed but couldn't help the tears that spilled over, "You...you did?" My voice sounded unaturally hoarse and sad.
Amy nodded, "Numerous bruises, scars, cuts on your wrists." That earned another hopeless sob from mom and I sighed and looked at her, "I'm sorry mom. I'm sorry." I didn't sob though. I only cried silently and was thankful when Amy brought me some water in a styrofoam cup. I gulped it down greedily and she brought me some more.
I had finished my third cup of water when the door opened and two people walked in. I smiled reassuringly at the people in the doorway.
Tears filled and slipped out of my dad's eyes when we walked over and pressed his lips to my forehead, "You're okay." He whispered happily to me. I nodded and was embraced in one of his bear-hugs. When he let go, I heard another squeal come behind him and smiled down at Jade. Happiness was shining through her eyes when she looked up at me.
