"If you're saying that, you know you can control it. I wonder what they do with these dogs."
The sound of teeth on bones was sharp and penetrating, and the stench of fresh flesh and blood was inhuman.
"Perhaps it's more extensive than I imagined. If they have to feed the dogs, the city, and themselves, they must have a much larger operation than I had seen so far. Perhaps the façade I glimpsed was only the tip of the iceberg; surely there's more to it. I must understand the purpose of these dogs."
A Molossus growled in their direction. They were suspended behind Alfred's back, clinging to each other to protect themselves from the carnage they were witnessing. The noise of teeth tearing through flesh, mixed with saliva and blood, was unbearable.
They both turned around. The Molossus was enormous, at least a meter high from the ground with muscular shoulders and bony paws. Its front paws were placed in front of its head, slightly sunken into its muscular shoulders, its muzzle recoiled, teeth gnashing, and saliva dripping from its jaw.
"Anna, he sees us. He sees us."
"He can't see us; perhaps he smells something. Stay calm. Don't lean on me; it bothers me. It will pass now. Anyway, he's in the cage; he can't do anything."
"Enough, mutt!" Alfred had grown impatient.
The dog had evidently been driven by hunger and captivity, and Ursula's nervousness made it nervous too. Ursula was leaning on Anna for protection. Anna, frustrated with her lack of arms and legs, couldn't do much to shield her.
"Can you kill him?"
"No, no, I don't want to kill him; he'll calm down now."
The dog jumped onto the cage, barking ferociously, focused on their direction. Alfred frowned, realizing something, and he looked directly into their eyes.
"Is there someone here?" his voice was timid but gained vigor, "Is there someone here? Who goes there?"
"Who goes there? Did this mummy live at least a hundred years ago?"
"Do we scare them?"
A diabolical thought crossed Anna's mind. They had to start somewhere, didn't they?
"Anna? Anna? Are you lost in thought? What are you planning?"
"I'm getting an idea... look."
Anna noticed that the front door was closed, and the room was very large, containing ten cages, each measuring at least a meter in width.
The cages were made of iron with vertical bars and locked with latches. Anna slowly lifted the latch on the Molossus's cage.
"Come on, baby, bang your big head on the cage again; maybe this time there's a surprise..."
