• EVERLEIGH •
It all happened so quick after the footmen opened the doors of the carriage. The shouts of soldiers paraded my ears as I sat, watching as they moved off their horses and began pulling us out one by one.
We were stopped by a side door of the palace where there was already a line of us getting pushed through. The royal crest, a dragon wearing a crimson red crown with two swords crossing through it, had been carved into the door. The detailing was lined with gold, much like everywhere else on this palace as far as I could tell.
I watch as Theo goes next, his bruised eyes glancing over to me for a moment with any hope he ever once had completely gone. My face drops and I nod my head at him as he gets pushed out. Never, never once in my knowing Theo had I ever seen him look so vulnerable, at least not in front of me, his ego was far too big for that, but not now.
Before I know it I'm getting dragged out shortly after Theo by two soldiers much older than me. My feet land harshly onto the muddy ground and I'm pushed into the line behind Theo as the sounds of yelling grow louder.
My eyes scan the area carefully, searching for any possible escape routes but the place was only covered in miles of endless gardens, gold statues, and soldiers standing watch at multiple towers.
There were no woods for miles on. It would be nearly impossible to not get caught trying to escape without trees to provide some sort of protection.
I knew there had to be some other way of escaping, the palace was far too large for there not to be a loophole, but even then he would make escaping much more difficult. It was only the king that would bring any chances of my escaping I had to zero.
He knows we're mates, and I'd be trapped forever under his hands.
I'm not sure if it was from hunger or from thinking of him, but I felt sick to my stomach. I try to keep my steps steady, try not to fall over and pass out. I couldn't seem weak, not here at least.
Theo was in front of me, he'd been silent for a while now ever since he'd found out Ross was gone. It was odd from him, usually he'd already have insulted me four times before I'd even opened my mouth.
We enter the door to be welcomed with absolute chaos. The place was full of workers, yet not even a quarter of them were actually rogues. Most of them were citizens under Verona who'd been too poor to afford comfortable living and resided to working in the palace.
I could tell who was a rogue by their slim figures from not being fed while working under the king, from the bruises and scars scattered on their bony figures caused by attacks and merciless beatings by soldiers.
