CHAPTER 1 : SUMMER
Amidst the summer of April, a sizzling ball was glued on the orange-yellowish skies of Central Japan. Waves of laughter from children, playing, chirping of the pigeons, and the gentle rustling of leaves in the wind enveloped the street filled with a variety of unlit-coloured lanterns.
With a single thud of one of her heels, a young girl with Sapphire Blue hair slid her foot into her leathered-brown shoes, adjusting her blue-white striped necktie underneath her beige vest and white-sleeved shirt.
The young girl fixed her posture and wore the strap of her bag before heading out of her house and seeing a clear blue sky with white pieces of cotton painted over it.
She breathed out in a relaxed manner before moving forward the grey-coloured brown with white stripes on the sides and dotted lines on the centre, indicating directions for the vehicle owners.
Strolling onward, she heard a loud masculine voice behind her form.
"Chi!" He called her by her nickname. Chihaya flinched in return due to his unexpected appearance.
"Yuji?" she mumbled his name as she tilted her head.
As fast as Usain Bolt, a young man around her age, wearing a rose-coloured hoodie underpart his long-sleeved black coat with six buttons, their school emblem was pasted on each button of his uniform.
The young boy suddenly stopped in his tracks, smacked his knees, and let out a heavy sigh right in front of her. "I can't believe it, we're together again!"
"Are you out of your mind?" Chihaya placed her hand on her chest dramatically.
"You'll give me a heart attack if you keep yelling my name in the middle of the street! And to top it off, people will think you're nuts," she griped, her brows furrowing.
"Come on, isn't this fun?" Yuji chuckled.
Chihaya held back her words, her lips forming a sly smile as her eyes bore into him. "Having fun shouldn't involve scaring people half to death," she told him.
Yuji let out an exaggerated eye-roll and sighed dramatically. "This isn't fair. I miss the old Chihihaya – the one who was carefree and didn't study all the time. The current Chihaya sucks!"
"You see, there's this thing called 'Academic Validation,' and I am craving it. But I guess you wouldn't get it, you know, because you're just not that into this stuff," she said, leaning in casually.
"You think I'm dumb?" Yuji asked with irritation in his tone.
"Basically, yeah," Chihaya replied bluntly.
