CHAPTER 7: TRANSFER STUDENT
"Iwakura, the Vice Principal wants to see you," a student, a passerby in her class, informed her, holding the frame of the sliding door and peaking her head into Chihaya's classroom.Chihaya stood up from her seat and stepped towards the girl until she heard a provocative exclamation from none other than Yuji's previous friend from middle school. "Looks like Iwakura is in trouble!" he shouted, encircled by his goof of his so-called friends and their tauntings.
Chihaya rolled her eyes before fleeing her classroom and following the girl's direction. She shifted her position beside the girl, eager to learn the reason for the Principal's request for her presence.
"Did they say anything?" Chihaya inquired, sweatdropped.
"They just told me to call you, that's all," the girl returned a response.
Chihaya approached the door that led to the General Office with a mix of anticipation and anxiety. As she reached for the handle, she could not help but feel her heart race, as if she was about to enter a new world. With a deep breath, she turned the handle and slowly pushed the door open, revealing a room filled with two people — the Vice Principal herself and a new student, she presumed.
As she stood there, lost in her thoughts, she felt a firm hand on her shoulder. Looking up, she saw the Vice Principal walking towards her, her face etched with satisfaction. She stopped right in front of Chihaya and gestured towards an unfamiliar individual standing next to her. "Perfect timing," he said reassuringly.
"Iwakura, I'd like you to show the new student around the school," she disclosed her intention. "M-Me?" Chihaya stammered in disbelief at her response.
The Vice Principal interrupted the conversation and requested that the student be introduced to her first. The Vice Principal beckoned the teenager to come forward, and as Chihaya turned to face him, she was met by the sight of a lean, youthful figure with an unusual hairstyle.
His jet-black hair was styled distinctively, with long spikes pointing out in all directions. It was striking and certainly made him stand out in a crowd.
"Fushiguro Megumi. A pleasure to make your acquaintance," the young boy introduced himself.
"Fushiguro, meet Iwakura Chihaya. She's respected and esteemed among the school's students," the Vice Principal conveyed.
'Respected, huh?' Chihaya thought, recalling her upsetting encounter earlier. Chihaya tugged each corner of her lips. "I hope we can get along,"
—
Megumi Fushiguro was a recent transfer to Sugisawa Municipal High School, but little was known about his background. Chihaya had heard that he came from Saitama Urami East Junior High School. While touring the school, Chihaya decided to start a conversation with him to break the ice. "So, Fushiguro, what made you transfer here?" she asked.
"Nothing much, just my family is moving out because of my father's work," he replied.
Chihaya looked at him and noticed that his eyes were scanning his surroundings, moving from left to right as he examined everything from the edges to the centre. "I see," she mouthed before staring forward.
After taking several steps, Chihaya and her companion arrived at the home economics room of their school, where the occult club was located. Chihaya wondered if her childhood friend was attending the club with their seniors. "This is the place students gather to discuss supernatural phenomena," Chihaya explained to the transfer student. But as Chihaya turned around to look at the transfer student, she discovered he was no longer there.
"Fushiguro?" she called; there was no response.
Chihaya retraced her steps to search for the young man she was with earlier. "Fushiguro, where are you?" she increased her voice as she took steps to navigate his direction. As she was engrossed in her search, Chihaya suddenly jolted and halted her search when a faint yet distinct, tweaking sound emanated from the far corner of the Design and Technology room.
Her heart pounded in her chest as she tried to regulate her breathing and calm her nerves. The sound reverberated through the room, creating an eerie sensation that sent shivers down her spine. Despite not knowing the source of the sound, Chihaya was acutely aware of the potential threat it posed and remained vigilant. However, her instincts urged her to approach the unknown sound like a magnetic force, attracting her to a magnetic object.
As the crowd of students shouted, "Go Itadori!" Chihaya's thoughts sank in an instant. She withdrew her attention from the loud cheering coming from the school's field and popped her head out of the window.
There, she noticed her pink-haired friend standing face to face with Mister Takagi, the teacher in charge of the athletic club. She also recognised Sasaki and Iguchi, the seniors who were members of the occult research club, standing by the side and supporting their beloved junior.
"That guy..." she mouthed, referring to Yuji, before pulling her head out of the window and searching for the new student.
"Chihaya,"
Chihaya scratched her ear gently. Unbeknownst to a buzzing sound that seemed like it mentioned her name. "Just focus on guiding Fushiguro," she whispered to herself. "Everything will be fine,"
