"That's all for today. Please complete your homework before tomorrow's lesson," the mathematics teacher instructed. Some of the students began to rise from their chairs, packing their textbooks and stationery items into their bags; some in a haphazard manner while others did so more systematically.
The students respectfully greeted their subject teacher before exiting the classroom. Some hurriedly dashed outside, while others remained behind for their extracurricular activities. Chihaya released a deep sigh and tightened the sash on her bag, her steps heavy as she made her way out of the classroom, her thoughts consumed by the upcoming after-school classes.
Chihaya scratched her head vigorously and stomped forward in frustration. Suddenly, a rackety voice called her name, and she turned her head just in time to be enveloped by one of Yuji's strong arms. The blue-haired girl hunched a little as Yuji wrapped his arm around her neck and flashed a mischievous grin.
"Seriously?" she quirked an eyebrow.
"Surprise?" Yuji returned an amused smile.
"No," Chihaya reacted bluntly.
Yuji dismissed with a scoff, playfully tousling Chihaya's azure hair. Weary, the girl with blue hair refrained from pushing the young boy out; she merely lacked the energy to try.
"Smart people's classes sound kinda scary," he remarked with a slight chuckle while pulling her towards the school's lockers. Chihaya puffed out heavily, slightly slumping her back.
"How about we have some curry chicken cutlet since you're tired?" he proposed. He nudged her side using his elbow and quirked his lips.
"You're kidding?" In return, Chihaya stared at him in disbelief.
"What? Did I do something wrong?" Yuji questioned, his curiosity evident.
Bowing gracefully, she deftly moved the young boy's arm aside from her temple. With a determined stride, she swung her feet forward, creating a purposeful rhythm as she advanced toward the locker site.
The rectangular, grey lockers, each with a slender slit in the centre for papers, were exclusively for first-year students, organised into ten rows for different classes. Lockers for second-year students were on the left side and for third-year students on the right side.
