We swam deep into the blue ocean, I followed Zale, not sure If he had any clue where he was going.
He slowly came to a halt, and looked at me.
His mouth twisted into what seemed to be a smile, but was too subtle for me to be sure.
He waved his hand for me to come. I swam to his side and he pointed at something moving.
I looked and saw a beautiful creature, it had what looked like long blonde hair , and a long tail.
A mermaid, was my first thought. But how could that be possible? Mermaids are not real. Then again, up until today, Vampires weren't real either. In a second, Zale dashed forward to the creature and tried to attack it. She struggled, and bared her teeth, snarling at him. She grabbed him by his hair and began to drag him down deeper into the ocean. Suddenly, I felt protective of him. I swam over and took her by suprise. I wasn't exactly sure what to do, but I figured I should give it a try. I dug my teeth into her neck and all the blood started rushing to the back of my throat and then down my body. It sent me into a frenzy. I sucked the blood out of her until I had every drop, I let go of her lifeless body and watched her sink to the bottom due to the weight of her tail.
I looked to Zale, somewhat ashamed of what I had just done. But he didn't look at me in a look of disgust, he looked at me with a look of gratitude, and pride.
We continued our hunt, draining the blood of animals, like fish, dolphins, sharks and all those types of things. We didn't find anymore Mermaids that day. Zale said that they are very rare, and we were lucky today. I was pleased with myself. And I felt better too, my throat no longer burned like it had before the hunt.
The warehouse was the same as when we left, everybody still stood in the same positions.
"Muiel, Serena, Coral, Dane, Avelia, Melvin, it's time to hunt" Calder spoke in a low voice. I noticed he was no longer wearing the robe, and for the first time, he smiled. As everybody left, Calder stood by Zale and myself.
"Zale. Nerina. Take good care of the warehouse" Zale nodded as I semi-hid behind him.
Calder looked my direction before following the rest of the clan out.
Zale looked down at me, and I realised I was gripping at his arm a little too tightly.
"I'm sorry." I muttered as I let go of him.
He let out a small grunt and walked over to a chair on the other side of the warehouse, facing the wall. I sat in one right by the door.
"Scary, isn't he" Zale's deep, muscular voice chuckled slightly.
I didn't reply, I was too afraid Calder would hear me if I agreed with Zale.
The rest of the night was spent sitting with Zale, just chatting about things. Like this new life. He told me how to survive. The do's and dont's in the vampire world.
The next few weeks flew by, Zale and I would go out and hunt. Stay out for a little bit longer, and then return to the warehouse, when everybody else would leave. We hardly saw the others, but I just had the feeling Calder knew everything we had been doing, And talking about.
There was one day, I was out by myself, hunting. Zale had to attend to something, first. I had no luck, seeing as my mind was set on Zale and where he was, I had no real motivation to hunt, well other then my unbearbly-bearable thirst. Zale told me not to return to the warehouse until I was with him.
So I lay on the beach, with my eyes closed, wishing I would just fall asleep. I missed human life. I missed my family, even though I cant remember anything about them. I miss being able to just live my life without always wanting to drink blood and to swim. There was only one thing I was greatful for in this life and that was Zale. He had been my teacher during these past few weeks and my rock. I didn't know what the hell I was doing, and it didn't seem like the rest of my clan was going to teach me, but Zale did.
My eyes opened due to my body being pulled up. I was set in somebody's lap, that I instantly recognised.
"Zale" I breathed into his neck.
His arms wrapped around my waist pulling me closer towards him. We weren't a thing or anything, at least I think we weren't.
"Nerina.." I pulled back.
Zale stared at me intently and sighed,
"tell me, Zale" I could tell there was something he needed to say.
He looked into my eyes a little longer and started getting closer and closer to me. I realised that I, myself, was leaning in also. Our cold lips pressed together, I felt a tingling of some sort inside my body. I gasped and pulled back, grasping my stomach, it Didn't hurt, but the feeling was so wierd and new to me.
"Nerina?" His voice was filled with worry.
"I'm fine" I looked up into his eyes again and kissed him once more before standing up.
"Calder must be waiting for us.."
He stood up also, but grabbed my arm, preventing me from moving.
"Let's go. Get away from here." this shocked me.
"Why, Zale? What's going on?"
He looked down,
"I think Calder is planning something.. A battle."
I squinted my eyes,
"So we finally get some action around here.. Great"
Zale shook his head,
"A battle we will lose. We're not prepared for this, we're not big enough let alone smart enough for this battle"
I huffed,
"We're as capable of a battle as anybody else"
Zale looked up at me,
"I'm not saying we aren't. But the particular clan Calder wants to battle.. We stand no chance."
Another clan? We could easily beat any other clan, I was sure of it.
"What makes them so special?"
He bit his lip for a second before he even said anything,
"They have alliences. With other clans.. And.. Werewolves"
I hissed,
That was one thing Calder had told me about. Werewolves. Our mortal enemy, filthy creatures he explained them as. He said they have a repulsive stench, only we can smell.
"Nerina, I'm starting to think everything Calder has taught the rest of us have been lies. And how he's been letting us out more often than not to go hunting lately, I think it's to muster up our strength. He knows if we do go into battle we would have to be on dry land For longer than we should be. You know we can't last long without water. We're sea-dwellers, very different from this clan"
He made sense, some things came to my mind aswell, even if he didn't say anything. Like how he'd been going missing for days and returning to train us with more urgency then before he had gone missing.
"The Sire of that clan, his name is Carlisle Cullen, Calder's brother.."
I looked at Zale dumbfoundedly.
"Why would he want to kill his own bro-"
He cut me off,
"I don't know"
I sighed, I knew he was right and we need to get away from Calder.
"He's like a hawk.. Zale. We have to plan this very carefully."
Zale smiled up at me,
"I know"
We walked hand in hand back to the warehouse and didn't speak of the conversation at the beach unless we were out hunting. The planning took about a week until we finally decided on a date make our escape.
