Our final moments were upon us, and they were being wasted by Jake laying out his evil plan.
"I cut off my leg to make it seem like I had been attacked, I wrote bloody messages all over Chase's secret bunker, I ordered the Penetrobalia under Ryder's name!" Jake was going crazy, and I was regretting drinking that water, even if I hadn't had too much of it. "Why would you do this?" Chase demanded. Tears streamed down his face. "It was an opportunity for me. By now, everyone in the city has heard about Everest. It's gone viral. Everyone will line up to stay at the ski resort, the same place it all went down. The same place the famous Chase met his unfortunate end. And once I pin it on Ryder, sue him and take his money, I'll have more than enough to get my business off the ground." I had just realized how much of a monster Jake had become. He wasn't going to stop at anything to get rich.
I stood up, and Jake immediately pulled a gun out of his pocket. "Move a muscle, and your death won't be so painless." I stared in horror at the weapon pointed at my face. "Please,", Chase begged. "Don't hurt her. You've already tried to kill her once." I thought back to the time I was poisoned and almost killed. Jake was in the lookout at the time. He had committed the perfect crime. Jake turned the gun on Chase. "How about you? Would you like to go first?" Chase looked down at his feet. "Please. Kill me, do whatever you want with me, but please don't hurt them." Jake laughed. "Too late! They've already been poisoned. And so have you." The state of Chase nearly brought me to tears. He had a pleading expression on his face, his eyes were watery and his cheeks were damp. I stood up again. "Can I please sit next to Chase?" I pleaded. "Fine. But the poison will be setting in any minute now." I switched places with Marshall, and I leaned in to Chase's side, trying to make him feel a little better. "It wasn't supposed to end this way," He turned to me, pain in his eyes. "I let you down." I felt a tear roll down my cheek. "Chase, you did no such thing. It's not your fault." His lips quivered, and he pulled me into a hug. I started to feel dizzy, and I knew I didn't have long. "I always wanted to spend the rest of my life with you, and I did." I said. We separated, and exchanged sad looks. My vision was blurring, and I knew it was time. "I love you Marsh." I heard Chase say. "I love you too bud."
The last thing I felt was Chase's warm embrace, before my whole world faded to black.
In an instant, I was back at the lookout. It was dark, and I was lying down in the grass, watching Chase and I look on at the stars. We were...fighting? I recognized it as the night Chase confessed his love for me. I was in a memory, I wasn't a part of the living, or a part of the dead. I was somewhere in between. But I was okay with that, because I always wished I could relive that moment. I admired the scene. "BECAUSE I LOVE YOU, OKAY?" My favourite part was coming. I said something, but I couldn't hear myself. We both leaned in, but before I could see what happened next, because again, everything went black.
And there was Ryder, lying on his bed, scrolling through whatever was on his phone. He was in his pyjamas, and his eyes were red. I was in present time, watching over him. His phone ringed. "Jake?" He said aloud. He clicked on the notification, and an audio recording started playing.
