A voice bellows from behind the door. ‘Hello?!’

Abhishek huffs, begrudgingly leaving Manisha and the bed for the door. When he opens it he’s less than welcoming.

‘Boliye?’

‘Disturb karne k liye maafi chahta hu Sir par ap logo ko yaha se nikalna hoga. Land slide ki wajah se agle 24 ghante yaha ki electricity baand rahegi.’

This can’t be happening.

As if this dingy motel wasn’t bad enough, now they have to pack up and leave just when things were getting good-

'Aur itni raat ko hum exactly kaha jayenge?'

‘Don't worry sir, yaha se ek ghante ki duri pe apke liye ek room ka intezam already ho chuka hain.. Ap apna saman pack karle aur yeh raha dusre hotel ka directions.’

A printout is shoved into his hand and he now stands alone at the door, watching the frantic motel owner hurry on to the next room.

He returns to Manisha, the paper floating to the bed. She couldn’t really hear what they were discussing but from the look on his face she can only assume it’s not good.

‘Abhishek? Kya bola unhone?’

He’s already packing his bag. ‘Humein nikalna hoga.’

‘Hein? Kahe?!’

Manisha grabs the paper and takes a quick look. There’s a printed map and a hotel circled in bold red but that doesn’t tell her much.

‘Next 24 hours yaha ki electricity baand rahegi cause of Land Slide aur electricity nahi to kuch bhi nahi so we have to leave. Apna saman sara pack karle.’

Her first thought is how it’s totally unfair. Things were finally about to progress with Abhishek and now this? Was the universe really that against them?!

When all is said and done land slides don’t give a shit about you getting it on with your best friend, so there’s really no use complaining about it. She huffs and sighs while she goes about packing her things but it’s not going to change the inevitable.

‘Ara mu maat chota kar, ho sakta hain yeh next hotel second Taj nikle.’

Manisha thinks the chances are slim, so she isn’t getting her hopes up although she appreciates his optimism.

By the time they bundle their stuff back in the car Manisha’s ready for a good night’s sleep. It’s late, and although she could’ve stayed up early into the morning had she and Abhishek finally gotten together, now the mood is ruined.

They’re mostly silent on the drive, neither of them sure what to say.

They’d been so close to that step from besties to lovers and now they both wondered if they’d ever get that chance again.

20 minutes from their destination and Manisha’s hungry again. Abhishek can hear her stomach rumbling, laughing to himself as the car hums along the busy freeway.

‘Mujhe nahi pata tha tujhe itna bhook lagta hain.’

She should be offended but it’s just another dig at her appetite, she’s used to it by now.

‘Tujhe humare haat ka khana khane se fursat mile to na khayal karega.’

He shifts gears as the speed limit lowers. ‘Nahi nahi Honestly itna khana jata kaha hain?’

‘tu kehna kya chahta hain?’

‘Yahi k tu itni choti si to hain to itna khana jata kaha hain?’

Manisha can’t help but laugh. ‘Yaha se kha k waha se nikal dete hain..’
