We shopped until we dropped, and then we got up and shopped again, like the terminator we could not be taken down easily.

My Mother was in such a good mood, that we all reaped the rewards of her generosity. Veda got another pair of sneakers, some jeans, and a couple hoody's, and Josephine got a hoody to match. I even got rewarded with two new pairs of sun glasses (I'm a hoarder) and a suit my Mother said I should buy. She still had high hopes I would be a professor one day. She didn't want me shattering the illusion too soon.

We were back at my Mothers home now, and Vedas fall ball dress was hanging on the back of the family room door. It was beautiful. The colour was a burnt orange, it was a satin cami dress, with a slight slit on the leg, that I threatened Kate would sew up for me. Veda looked stunning in it, and Josephine had taken so many pictures I thought she might have to upgrade her storage plan by the time she went home. She had found a perfect dress too, which I had text the details of to Teddy and Harper so that they could find it when they were ready to take her shopping.

Wren had text that she was on the way, and my Mother had let me know that Avery was coming too. It was five forty five, and I had been in the kitchen for an hour, staring at an oven and willing it to come alive and do the job for me.

The back door rattled and Kate's little blonde head could be seen through the coloured glass. I raced over, and opened it eagerly "Thanks for sneaking round" I greeted her.

She looked me up and down. A smile lifted her full cheeks, and she covered her mouth with her hand so she could hide her laughter. "Mills" she asked, clearly amused "what made you think you could do this"

I looked to the Mirror beside the door as she came in. The hair at my temple was frizzed from the heat in the kitchen. The red and white striped apron that I wore halfway down my body, not covering much of me at all, was covered in white flour, and so were my pink cheeks. Luckily I had thrown my hair up into a messy bun already, or it too would look like a birds nest. I was wearing a sleeveless white shirt, which I had unbuttoned down past my white bra with the heat. I made a mental note to button it back up for the dinner.

"Slutty in the kitchen" Kate noted, peeking at the lacy bra that was on display, and my breasts which also seemed to be catching flour.

"Just fix this" I ask desperately, "please" I add, gesturing to the kitchen island, which was covered in pots and pans, and every cooking utensil my Mother owned. The stove also resembled a culinary crime scene, with pots bubbling away, and a burnt skillet among the mess.

Kate looked around the room and then back to me "Millie what are you even making" she asked "at this point" she said, walking over to the stove and lifting a lid on a boiling pot "it's unidentifiable"

I ran my hands up over my head stressed, and shook my head "I couldn't even tell you anymore"

Kate began to laugh. "Millie please don't cook anymore. The microwave was made specifically with you in mind, my beautiful undomesticated messy angel"

I frowned and released my head "I just want to prove I can do this" I explain "Wren wants to marry me one day ... but what if I still can't cook. We might be the only family on the block ordering doordash on the daily"

Kate came over and wrapped both her arms around me tightly "Listen Dawson, let's be positive okay, you just inherited a shit tonne of money. I think the gods looked kindly on you, they knew door dash was expensive, and they found a way"

I nodded and hugged her back "you always know how to cheer me up" I say, hugging her tighter. Kate was the best person to cuddle with, she was so comforting. "But I haven't heard from Jason yet... so I can't spend it"
