A week later

I was in my room. Just relaxing. Reading my comics and drinking coffee stolen from Glenn. I heard someone knocking. It was (of course) Carl.

"Hey," he said. His hands were in his pockets as he walked over to me.

"Hey. Did you need something?"

"Me? Oh, I-I didn't. I just came to check on you."

I rolled my eyes at him and his comment. He was treating me differently than usual.

"Why? I'm fine."

He sat down on my bed. His eyes began to fill with worry.

"No, you're not," he finally said.

"Why do you care so much?"

"Because... You are part of this family, and family looks out for each other."

"Bullshit. 'Family' is just another lie they tell kids."

I said. My experience with my family was unlike any other. My mother was a whore. She got money by dancing on men's dicks and just showing her tits to whoever would pay enough. My dad, he was a total asshole. Well, that's an understatement.

Narcissist? Rapist? Both those words fit my father. But, as most people would say...

"She's just a kid! She doesn't know better."

"It's not. Family is...It's risking your life for the people you love. Family is people who are there for you, people who protect you, who love you, support you, and who would die for you. It doesn't matter if you're blood-related or not. They are there for you."

My eyes widened as I looked at him. He cared about me. I tried to force a smile.

"Two people are dear to me, Maggie and Glenn. There is no doubt that they are your family. I might not fully trust you, but I can agree that we can become friends."

He lifted out his hand.

"Friends."

I shook his hand. It felt good to have someone by my side. We heard banging outside the walls. I and Carl ran outside to see all of the people of Alexandria standing by the walls. "Rick, what the hell is going on?" I ran to him as the moans and groans of walkers echoed through my head. I looked at Ron, his eyes filled with anger. "The herd, it got separated. Daryl, Abraham, Sasha, and Glenn are still out there. We all need to stay calm." Once I heard Glenn's name, I froze. I was scared. Rick was talking to everyone, trying to calm them all down. As if he had everything under control. Rage grew in my eyes. My blood boiled. I looked at Carl. He seemed worried. I walked away, back to my house.

A couple of hours passed by. It was a peaceful hour as I was just drawing in my sketchbook and trying to get through the day. Then I glanced out my window and saw Rick instructing Ron on shooting. I was curious to know if Rick knew anything about Glenn. I grabbed my stuff and raced towards him. I came to a halt when I saw Carl there. I could see the stupid brown sheriff's hat from a mile away. "Rick," I said as I paused.

"What is it, Audrey?" he asked. Turning around to look at me.

"Any news about Glenn? I'm a bit worried."

"He's going to be fine. Imma make sure of that."

My heart started to calm down when he said that.

There was no doubt in my mind that the walls of the house were strong. If anything, the person whom I was most concerned about was Judith...
