I walk into my room as I see Cameron walk behind me.
"Hey, I heard you got the new kid. Looks like a stiff!" He says as he laughs and walks away, bumping into Todd.

I actually think he's just really shy. He got flustered just shaking my hand and introducing himself.

We start unpacking our things when Meeks, Knox, and Charlie all walk in.

"Rumor has it someone did summer school." Charlie points to me and smiles.

"Yeah my father wants me to be ahead in my education" I say

We then establish our study group and the 3 boys introduce themselves to Todd. I invite him to our study group but he quickly says no.

The next day

The morning went has gone slowly.  English is our next class, I hope it's better than our other classes. I always preferred it to Latin or trigonometry

We all get seated and wait for our teacher to walk in.
I see him peer out from behind the door to his room.
He walks out his room but instead of going to the front of the class, he leaves the room, whistling.

Everyone stares at the doorway until we see him again. He looks at us expectantly and says:
"Well, come on!"

I look around at everyone else uncertainly.

Is this a trick or something?

Everyone shrugs and gets up to leave. The teacher, we learned his name was Mr. Keating, leads us out into the hall.

He stops in front of the trophy case and asks Pitts to read a poem.

"Gather ye rosebuds while ye may.
Time is still a-flying.
And this same flower that smiles today, tomorrow will be dying."  Pitts finishes reading and looks up at Mr. Keating with uncertainty, wanting to know if he read the poem well.

"Thank you Mr. Pitts." Keating smiles.  "Gather ye rosebuds while ye may. The Latin term for this is 'carpe diem'. Now, who knows what that means?"

Meeks raises his hand swiftly and says with confidence: "Carpe diem. That's seize the day."

"Thank you, Mr..."

"Meeks." He says, a small grin on his face.

A thoughtful look sweeps over Mr. Keating's face.
"Seize the day! Gather ye rosebuds while ye may! Why does the writer use these lines?"

"Because, he's in a hurry."  Charlie shrugs.

"No! Ding! Thanks for playing anyway."  Mr Keating says. This gets a couple of laughs from the group.

"Because'   Mr Keating continues, 'we are food for worms, lads. Everyone of us here is going to sue on day. Stop breathing, turn cold, and die."

~~~~ after class cause I'm lazy
At lunch, Cameron is complaining about how Mr Keating isn't going to be a "traditional teacher" and why it's unethical or something. I start to tune him out as I stare at Todd. I keep trying to decipher him but I can't. There's just something different about him. Not to mention he hasn't said much to me, either. So that doesn't help. He just seems like a new and interesting person. Maybe we'll talk more tonight.
