ONCE UPON A time, my parents finally agreed on letting twelve year old me attend a birthday party at someone else's house. This is a great Hallelujah deal coming from a brown parent. Brown is simply a way of calling us south-Asians since it's awkward when we call ourselves Asian despite being Asians because the Asian stereotype is milky skin and slanted eyes. Phew, I talk too much but then again, God all mighty as we believe he/she is, gave me this mouth so that I can use it. Which is why I am using it well.
I get off my bed and dig into my drawer for that one pair of jeans I absolutely have to wear for Tania's birthday. Not because of her, but because Amit will be there. Amit, my childhood crush that I can't seem to push off of my mind. Although I won't go around telling him about my feelings because, first, these feelings might just be some crush that will eventually fade away soon and second, I don't want to ruin our friendship. I mean that dude is okay with me playing soccer with the guys. Unlike the others.
"Ugh!" I groan taking a pair of light blue jeans which are not the particular pair I was hoping to find. I give up on trying to find it. I slide in it and button the shirt I have on me. Green and long sleeved, it is soft and has these awesome intricate blue patterns on the sleeves. I put on my socks and prepare my bag. Ugh, you know what? Forget it, I'm not bringing any darn bag that's gonna get in my movements. I quickly pull the jeans off of me and take out an army printed mobile pants out. My favorites. I put my keys in one pocket and money in another.
"Ammu, I'm going now!" I call out before stepping out the front door. My mother comes to stand on the doorway.
"Be careful on the way." She tells me as I put my black converses on.
"Sure." I smile at her.
"You're going to buy the gift on the way?" She asks me.
"Yes, I'll buy flower or a bracelet or something."
"That's okay with me but don't blow your money on useless things." She says frowning. Gosh, I'm not that irresponsible.
"Okay, I'm leaving now." I tell her starting to get down.
"Wait, wait, wait, " my mother calls out, "do you have your key?" I nod in response as she finally waves goodbye to me. I walk down the stairs all happy. Once outside, the summer sun hits my face instantly. Shielding my eyes for a brief second, I walk down the sidewalk jumping around occasionally. At the corner of my house there is a flower shop. I go in and buy some wild flowers for Tania. Once out, I head on to the right reading the streets' names carefully. While reading a sigh, I bump into someone and fall on my behind. Groaning, I get up and grab the flowers.
"Oh, I'm so sorry, I wasn't looking." The person says."Oh, Isha!" I lift my head up and see Luis.
"Yo!" I greet him. "You're going to Tania's birthday?"
"Yep, you too I presume?" I nod in response as he smiles and offers to go together. "Is that even an option?" I laugh before we head to Tania's house.
"OH MY GEE! Isha, thank you for the flowers! And chocolate too!" Tania screams after having opened my gift . All guests are seated in a big circle. The adults are outside discussing leaving us children alone and so we decided to play truth or dare. It is now, Imarie's turn to spin the bottle.
"This is going to be fuh-un!!" She chants as the spinning bottle points at Amit. "Okay, truth or dare?" she sings the last word.
"Ummm" Amit hums thinking, "truth!" he declares giving his usual arrogant and narcissist smile. If it weren't for me crushing on him since two years ago, I would say that he is a bitch but I will only state, he has a better self esteem and confidence which so many lack.
"Coward!" Most of the guys and I yell and shoo him for it.
"Come on dude, a man should man up and take a dare." I state punching my chest like I'm giving an oath.
"Are you a man?" Amit turns to me.
"I am a huMAN." I smile as I am followed by a few "ooohh buurn". I pull my tongue at him as he shakes his head and turns his head to Irini.
"Okay, so let's continue?" He encourages her.
"Ummm, do you like Isha? In that way." Imarie asked with a huge grin on her face. I turn my head at her and glare the deadliest glare I can give.
"Ummm..." Amit fakes thinking and glances at me from times to time. I look at him and at the ground. The last thing I want to do is look at him in the eyes. That would be deadly. "Since it's a truth," he starts moving to where I am and slides an arm around my shoulders, "yes, I do." He smiles at me. I look at him dumbfounded and hold his gaze.
"He sounded as if he just agreed to marry Isha." Someone pointed out as I looked away and blushed.
"Well if there's no choice, I'll marry Isha. She plays hockey and isn't scared of getting dirty." Hearing compliments coming from him has my heart flying away like a bird. I am certain it's about to come out of my chest anytime. I like him but I just don't know if he means the words he is declaring right now. Better not take a risk.
"Oh, I'm so sorry I'm late!" A voice suddenly appeared in the jungle of noise I am in. The voice is soft and melodious and I recognize Laila's voice. I turn my head to the door where her gracious silhouette appears. Amit's arm leaves my shoulder in the speed of light as she approaches us. "Happy birthday Tania." Laila offers her billion dollar smile.
"Thank you," Tania smiles, "come play with us." she pats the little space beside her. Laila is slim enough to squeeze in there. So jealous.
"So as we were saying, Amit just said yes to him liking Isha." I look down immediately as I hear her chuckle slightly. "Well anyone can like Isha." She says, "I mean she's adorable." For some reason I feel that the last word was filled with venom.
"No, it's the like as in like, you know, crush." Imarie smiles. I blush and slightly turn my head towards Amit who has a serious expression.
"Well I had to say yes, I mean, she's so pitiful. I didn't want to hurt her feelings." He scoffs as some people do a 'damn, I wouldn't have taken that'.
Gasping for air, I look at the ground immediately. If it wasn't for me crushing on him, I would've said that he's practically bipolar but I will only say that he is just embarrassed. I can't help the tears from building up and threatening to come out so I quickly get up and head to the kitchen. Having him say those words are insulting but it hurts my ego even more since we're around Laila. She is definitely the last person I wish to see me getting ridiculed. I quickly grab one of the tacos and take a bite, letting the tears flow. I return to where the others are with a good excuse about the tears.
"I mean look at her, she's so damn ugly!" I hear Amit's voice. "Who would like that type of girl." He keeps talking despite my presence in the room. "And she's fat and acts like a guy." I don't say anything to him. I stay silent and smile before bursting into a loud laughter to hide my pain at his words. Every time, he acts like he likes me and the moment later, I'm the person he despises most in life. I have enough!
"Yeah you're right, but at least my existence has a meaning unlike your lazy one." I spit at him. Despite the venom in my voice, my heart still sinks deeper once more.
Because his words slash me like a blade and his words always play back in my head.
Over and over again.
