I'm stuck in this stupid meeting. Enough time has past that my Mother couldn't push back the festivities any longer. That means I've spent a month with my Mother planning my suitors ball. Picking dumb decorations I don't care about for a stupid ball where all the daughters of all the kingdoms are going to fight for my proposal. I'm so sick of the planning. Now I have another meeting about all the great qualities each lady has. From lady training, to politics, all the way to possible child bearing for a suitable heir. After everything that happened my Mother was able to push the ball back to my ninetieth birthday party.
I'm listening to this formidable representative ramble on about his kingdom's proper princess when the door to my office flies open. Gelvain enters the room looking disheveled with her blonde hair in her face and out of breath. I rise from my seat glad with any excuse to leave this encounter. "Excuse me sir," I leave the representative and step outside to see Gelvain with Jarolt close behind me. "What is it? I'm in a stupid meeting."
Gelvain takes a moment to catch her breath, "she's awake." I stare at Gelvain in disbelief and she nods her head to me. Something comes over me and I start sprinting down the hallway. I run towards the sleeping wing of the castle with all my might. My formal clothes restricts me, so I pull on my tie and throw off my tight jacket. I don't care. I run past the guards posted at her room. With a heavy breath I burst into her quarters. I find her, Aria, standing unbalanced at the edge of her bed with Madam Wren offering a guiding hand. Aria is dressed in a white night gown, her hair and face are unkept, yet her wings are breathtaking. They are wide and a bright white that captures the eye even in the bright castle walls. They extend softly off her feminine frame.
Aria offers me a gentle smile, "hello your hi-" I run to embrace her. I don't know what takes over my body, but I quickly wrap my arms around Aria. I hold her tightly against me. I'm just so happy. I pull her out of my embrace and stare deeply into her soft gray eyes.
"I'm so happy to see you," I say softly.
Aria nervously chuckles back at me. "You act like you haven't seen me in so long."
My stare flattens as I take in her words. "Wait, do you not remember?" I look to Madam Wren and her weary eyes are teary.
"Remember what?"
"Aria, you've been in a coma." She stares up at me in disbelief, "for three months."
"What?" Aria looks shell shocked. "No, no, that's not possible. We were just-" my words make her legs wobble. I steady her within my arms as I guide her back onto her bed.
"Aria," I look deep into her eyes to calm her. "What's the last thing you remember?"
"I looked out the window," she's gasping for air. "And Gelvain was," she points over my shoulder. "The demons, the children." Aria is beginning to panic. We can't have that in her fragile state.
"Hold on, hold on, deep breaths." I breathe along side Aria as she gathers her thoughts.
"And pain," Aria turns her head back to her wings spread on the bed spread. "And blood," Aria begins tearing up. I hold her with Madam Wren as she begins to cry out. I wish she didn't have to go through that alone, but there's nothing I can do to change the past now. Aria's mind and body has been through something no one has seen before. Aria's been put through immense pain I can't even fathom. The room falls silent as we all listen to Aria wail at her memories. None of us were there. We all should of been.
I spend the rest of the day explaining the events of everything to Aria as she weeps in Madam Wren's arms. The memories paint themselves on her face as tears stream down her cheeks. I cannot fathom the emotions playing through her head in her memories.
