through the eyes of an alchemist. -age 9

THERE WERE TIMES where she wasn't around her usual bodyguards. Times when she'd huddle on the floor, covering her ears as if there were loud sirens sounding. Times where someone should've been around to bear witness and take her to a quieter place.

It's been the 4th day in the row that I happen to cross paths with her in that condition. She didn't scream, nor whimper despite the obvious discomfort. But I observed that as soon as someone around did come for her, she'd resume as if nothing happened. Hidden away. She didn't seem to be acting then which was most confusing.

"Are you in trouble?" Assuming that the sirens were sounding again. She couldn't hear the sound of my footsteps.

She was small and scrawny for a girl my age. Her hair was just slightly frizzled. It would've been best to stay away from the recent unpredictable weather. Flakes of snow gathered on the edges of her coat. The back of her neck was completely exposed while the rest of her hair went to cover her face.

She froze, slowly lifting her face away from her legs, her hair following the flow of her movement.

"Can I say no?" She mumbled, a slight tremor in her voice. She wore a weary expression that I couldn't decipher at the moment. Was she scared? Or cold?

I nodded and to her hesitance, she removed her hands from her ears. For a brief moment, she stared beyond without a thought running through her head. The sirens, could she still hear them?

"It's quiet again. . ." she whispered. "Did you help me?" she asked a little bit louder that time.

We've never met until this moment. I've just been enjoying the omniscuent observation of her mysterious condition. Maybe if I had approached her earlier, she would've thanked me then. Her condition was intriguing. This required more studying.

"I'm not sure." I replied.

But then she smiled. Her cheeks were red from the wintry air even though she was covered head to toe in winter attire. A relatively thankful, closed-eyed smile etched on her face so naturaly. There were just so many questions I wanted to ask her. She opened her eyes after a long second. Crystal clear e/c eyes.

Her eyes were so. .

A voice in the distance called her name.

"Y/n?"

Oh.

She sprung up almost immediately looking for the source of the voice. By this point, I had already ran away, hiding behind the stairs around the corner nearby. We only met each other by an off-chance. There was no reason for getting to know her on a personal level.

Heavy steps drew closer to her. "Were you having fun in the snow all the way over here?"

A pair of two-toned laughs filled the air. "Sorry Kaeya," She paused, "I just wanted to look at the scenery while you were training."

The atmosphere went dim like an unspoken understanding possessed the air. The adopted son of the Ragvindr family, Kaeya. So she was acquainted with them? And the other, Diluc Ragvindr. Knowing what I've seen, they seem to care a substantial amount for her.

It was odd enough that I happened to know something they didn't. For some reason, meeting a girl with an odd disposition drew me closer. I desired something more. Maybe a sense of competition. A desire to dispell the sirens.

She was more of a fascinating girl than I had originally thought. I just needed to study her more; maybe then, would these unfamiliar feelings be satisfied. My curiosity was already piqued. I found myself suddenly become motivated to create something other than charcoal paintings. When I went back to my lab, I grabbed feathery, pink pompoms and began working until the next morning.

I wonder if she likes lacey decoration.

Hugging her knees tightly, she laid dormant in the middle of the plaza. A bit more obviously this time. Her eyes shut with such force and a cold sweat falling from her face. It could've easily been mistaken for tears.

It seemed like this time, she tried to refrain from covering her ears.

My steps made heavy prints in the snow. I didn't bother to strike another conversation with this girl. After all, I plan to make this my last meeting with her.

I held a pair of earmuffs that I thought would suit a girl best. Pink, feathery, and decorated in lace. I pushed her hairs aside and quickly placed the muffs on. Once the main problem was gone, I was so sure that all that made her intriguing to me would simply disappear.

Her eyes shot open and she immediately went to touch what was on her ears. No longer writhing in pain, she let herself relax. Now that the sirens were gone, I won't see her huddled in the middle of the snow anymore. I won't have the intrinsic feeling of helping her anymore.  I won't have to interact with her at all.

"Did you make this for me?" Her voice cut through the delicate barrier I had made for myself. It intruded my thoughts. Like it was the only thing I could focus on.

I held my breath. "Why would you think so? They're just earmuffs."

Ah.

I thought I said I wouldn't strike another conversation with her.

"They feel warm." She said, staring at the floor while holding the pompoms covering her ears.

What does that even mean?

"Made with love and care," She smiled, looking up at me.

Love and care. She was the strange one but why am I feeling the bubbles in my throat?

"I love laced things." She just kept on talking. As if this was the first ever item she was given. Something worth of praise. Something worth the sparkles in her eyes and the happy giggles.

"Was it enough lace?" I quickly covered my mouth in my own bewilderment. For the first time, I could feel the chill on my fingers and the warmth of my cheeks clashing.

She blinked absentmindedly, then grinned. Suddenly lunging toward me, she shouted, "Just the right amount!"

The force of her body pushed the both of us onto the bed of snow before I had enough time to react. A fluff of snow flew and all of a sudden, she was above me with her arms wrapped over my head. She laughed as if we were the only ones around. I couldn't see myself ever abhorring that beautiful smile.

I had learned that day that her smile was dangerously contagious and that I had fallen under her spell, just like the rest.
