Chapter Twenty: The Truth

Ares's Pov

After Stiles and I said our goodbyes and promising to call each other when we can he left with Jackson to head home.

Derek brought Em and I into his car so he could take us home.

When we got home the three of us entered the house and went into the living room so we could sit down and talk.

"Where's Isaac?" I asked my sister when I sat down on the couch.

"He's upstairs sleeping. When we got home after meeting Mr. Walker he went upstairs to sleep" Em told me.

I nodded at that and watched as Em and Derek sat down across from me on the other couch.

Derek wrapped his arm around Em's shoulders and my sister immediately leaned into his touch.

"So..." I trailed off, unsure of what to say.

"I know you have tons of questions" Derek started.

"And I promise you that whatever you have to ask we will answer honestly. I'm not going to keep anything from you. Not anymore" Em finished.

I said nothing and simply nodded at the two of them.

"So, what do you wanna know?"

"Before I ask any questions, I just want to say that I went into our parents bedroom and found pictures. Pictures of them with Talia Hale, your mother" I said, looking at Derek in the end.

"I know. You showed me that one the day you came to my house" Derek nodded.

"Which brings me to my first question. Were my parents friends with your family?" I asked.

Derek and Em looked at each other and my sister nodded at him. Derek sighed before looking at me.

"Yes. They were" Derek nodded.

"For how long?" I asked.

"For as long as I can remember" Derek replied.

I nodded before turning to my sister.

"Second question. How long have you and Derek been together?" I asked.

Em and Derek looked at each other, small smiles on their faces, before turning to face me.

"We've been together since highschool" Em revealed.

My jaw dropped at that. 

I wasn't expecting them to have been together for that long.

I was expecting them to have gotten together either when Derek came back or something.

"Em was there for me when I was going through a rough patch. She comforted me, reminded me that it wasn't my fault and made me believe in love again" Derek explained.

"It wasn't long before we realized that we were mates. Our feelings and our love for each other was just a bonus to that" Em added.

Again, I wasn't expecting that.

Especially the mates part. I didn't even know that was a thing to begin with.

"But what about after you left? I mean you were gone for 6 years after the fire that killed your family" I asked.

The two lovebirds looked at each other and sighed before turning back to me.

"We talked about that and Em understood that I wasn't comfortable being in a town that brought back bad memories. We thought about doing long distance but realized that it wouldn't work. We agreed to end things and, believe me, it wasn't easy for either of us" Derek explained.
