2: his little pet

After some time in the man's car and a long silence he thought it'd be wise to strike up a conversation. I stayed silent. I didn't want to talk to a man who I know nothing about. Hel, I don't even know his name and I don't care to learn it.

He would go on about his plan to me about the Tesseract and what he hoped to do with it. It piqued my interest only a tiny bit but it all diminished when he said he'd make weapons out of whatever force his scientist could come up with.

Father did like his weapons, but I nor Frigga never liked the idea of wars being forged and lands being overthrown for no reason.

The hours passed by long enough for me to ask the man his name. He answered, Johann Schmidt. I've heard his name along with the most foul one of all, the man who started this second world war here on Midgard. Thor would love all the action but would never stand beside them.

The months went by in his hideout in the mountains of Germany. It was a beautiful sight outside and it contrasted with the horrors happening inside. And a small framed man that went by Arnim Zola hasn't been a comfort. He poked and prodded at me while I was in an involuntary sleep. He was either taking my blood or putting something in me that had no effect. Nothing ever felt different about me.

I was always kept on a tight leash with Johann or Arnim. It depended on who got to me first. It was always Johann. It was very obvious from the night we met that he had a particular fascination with me. Well, a lot of people of Asgard have always said that my natural presence hypnotizes them as if they're in love. I really hope he isn't, because he's a walking no thank you.

"Lillian, do you know why I like having you around," Johann asked.

"No, but I assume you're going to tell me anyway," I said with my arms crossed around my abdomen.

"Because you keep me calm. Not many people can do that. My own mother couldn't help me."

Oh great, a grown man with mother issues. I don't need another one of those.

"Forgive me if I seem overcautious," Arnim said to Johann from across the room. "If with her power and the delicate calibration of this machine, it could work."

I wanted to say something but I fear it could lead to me being either getting hurt or locked in a cell. Neither of those are pleasant.

"Are you certain," Johann asked him, while keeping his eyes on me.

"With this artifact, I am certain of nothing. I fear it may not work at all."

That's reassuring.

Johann had the Tesseract in the same box from where it was buried within the church. The glow seemed brighter than usual. Was it because of how my presence affects it? That's something I'd have to ask father about if I ever get back to Asgard.

Johann picked up the cube with a special set of what looked to be tongs and put it inside the machine. "Lady Lillian, would you please help out with this part."

Since he said it so nicely, I guess I'll help. I placed my right hand out in the direction of the machine as Arnim turned the dial powering up. I was feeling drained when it got halfway. Because of that, the wind and snow were picking up outside causing a small storm.

"Stabilizing at 70%," Arnim said.

"I did not come all this way for safety, Doctor," Johann replied.

I wanted to scream from the sheer amount of power I had to withstand. Instead, the tears flowed freely from my eyes. Once the machine was fully powered, there were screeches from other places in the universe calling out. I've only read about this in the books back at home. Either something went right or something went completely wrong, I couldn't tell.
