4: back home

I was placed in a room where all there was a metal table and a very uncomfortable chair for me to sit on. I could hear someone outside the door, it sounded like a woman and a man talking in hushed tones. I heard my name pop up and got curious. What could they possibly know about me? Not a lot of people who I'm close with wouldn't give up my information so willingly.

When the door opened a woman came in and dropped a file right in front of me.

"So, Lillian, why are you working for Johann Schmidt," the woman asked as she sat down in her own chair.

"What? Work with him? I would never do that on my own free will. I've been his prisoner for who knows how long. I don't even know what year it is anymore," I replied.

"It's 1945. In this handy file I was given, it says you were taken from Norway back in 1942 by him and no one had seen you ever again. You're lucky we've found you."

"And who are you to tell me that I'm 'lucky'."

"I'm Agent Carter from the Scientific Strategic Reserve. I am one of very few people in this place who wants you to go back to your country safely. Or, on your own decision, work for us."

"Work? For you? Yeah, no thank you. I'd rather get back home."

"So you have a family? Why would they only give out a missing persons report but not go looking for you," she said crossly.

I let out a sharp breath, trying to contain my anger. I can't have all Hel break loose in this tiny room. "My family has been long dead. You better watch your tone with me, missy. And, whoever put that report out was most likely a close family friend."

She looked like she wanted to say something else but the knock on the door caught her attention. Once the door closed I took it upon myself to see who made the report, the Jensens, of course. They were like a second, or third, family to me.

I could hear the same two voices on the other side of the door. Except the man was much louder than before. I could hear the hurt in his voice, something must've happened. The hallway outside the room was quiet for a good five minutes. I didn't expect anyone else to come into the room. I thought Peggy would be the only person who would talk to me.

"You can go home but I need you to answer a few questions," he said. His eyes were puffy as he was crying just minutes ago.

I quickly studied his face. He was determined. "Yeah, sure. But I'd like to know your name first. Or was that too forward?"

"Steve Rogers," he said, giving me the tiniest smile. His shoulders relaxed as some of his tension was relieved. "Okay, one; do you know where you and the doctor were going on the train when we found you? And two; can I trust you?"

"I have no clue as to where we were going, I was never allowed to be in on the plans. And yes, you can trust me. I have nothing to lie to you about."

He nodded his head and left the room. Leaving me to my devices.

~ Norway, 1946

I had made my way back to the Jensen's family home. Or what was left of it. It was just a ruin now after this ugly war. I looked for anything that they could've left for me if I were to ever come back. Nothing.

"Heimdall? Can you hear me? I'd like to come home now. There's nothing here for me. I miss everyone. I know Odin doesn't want me back but I'll take the consequences," I said toward the sky. I waited for what felt like hours for the response I so desperately wanted, but it was really only minutes.

I felt the bifrost circle around me to bring me back home. The range of emotions I was feeling was vast and what made me happier was seeing Thor being the first person to greet me.

"Oh, Lady Lillian, it is so good to see you again! Everyone's missed you. Especially father," he said excitedly. We walked down the rainbow bridge towards the city at our own pace

"Why is father excited? Last I heard he wanted me in the dungeons as my punishment for losing the Tesseract."

"Who told you that and when?"

"Loki, he came down to Midgard a year ago, I think? He said that father never wanted to see me again. And that I was to live the rest of my days back down there."

"That is impossible, he would have told me that he went to go see you. Everyone here on Asgard misses you dearly, Lillian."

There was a deep comfort hearing that from him. I just hope dear father has the same sentiment. The two of us made it to the main entrance of the hall where Odin and the rest of the family were. He was sitting proudly on his throne while Frigga, Thor and Loki stood by his sides.

After hearing one thing from Loki and another from Thor only moments ago, this could go either way. I am hoping it's the reaction Thor predicted on our way here.

"Lillian, so nice of you to come back. But upon your arrival I must say; losing the tesseract..." there was a long pause "was not your fault. Henceforth, there is to be no punishment."

"But father, I was told some time ago that there was going to be one if I ever returned. Loki relayed that message himself," I said.

I felt the eyes like daggers that were Loki's stare. I took one look into his own and figured he had his own plan to keep me on Midgard.

Odin turned his whole body to Loki and then back at me. I could almost feel the anger wanting to break free and let loose. "Is that so, my dear," he asked.

I nodded my head as Loki himself strutted towards me and gave his own explanation.

"Father, may I say one thing," Loki asked. Father nodded letting him continue. "It seems to me that Lillian has been gone for so long and it seems to me that she was dreaming this scenario. I have never left Asgard without permission. And I would never dream of leaving this beautiful realm. It's my home too."

That sly little fox. I know damn well I wasn't dreaming when he came down to see me for that short conversation we shared. The urge to tell him the truth of his parentage was stronger than Thor's hammer.

"Well as that may be, I believe the both of you have said the truth. It is impossible to find the truest version of the whole story. We are going to let this be done and gone. We shall never speak of his to anyone. Understand," father said. We all nodded our heads and left the hall.
