You awoke in your bed, but everything felt different. The edges of your bed and other furniture seemed to blur and flutter towards the ceiling. Everything was also covered in a grey film, like you were in an old-timey movie.
Rosinante was still sleeping soundly next to you, but when you went to go touch him, your hand passed through him. You were startled by this, you knew you were dreaming, yet it didn't feel like a dream, you felt wide awake.
You decided to get out of bed and check things out. With your feet on the floor you noticed you were still laying in bed sound asleep, despite being awake and standing out of bed. It felt weird to stare at yourself from this vantage point, you didn't know if you were lucid dreaming or if Penelope was playing one of her tricks.
You attention was drawn in by the sound of the front door opening and closing. You briefly wondered if it was Law, you never heard the teen come home before you went to bed. You wanted to see how this lucid dream worked.
You walked out of your room, fazing through the door like a ghost. You made your way to the top of the stairs and stopped. It wasn't Law standing near the front door. A man who was probably once very tall, but was now hunched over himself due to age stood there. You couldn't make out any of his features since the lights were off, but you could tell he was holding something.
"We can play lots of games?" Came a little girls voice. You were guessing the man was holding Penelope and that the man was Gunter.
"Yes. Play games." Gunter spoke with a slur, like he had some sort of speech impediment.
This must have been the day Gunter kidnapped Penelope. You stayed quiet at the top of the stairs as you watched Gunter hobble further into your house.
"We'll be best friends right?" Penelope asked.
"Best friends." Gunter replied
You found it odd that Penelope didn't seem to be frightened by Gunter. In fact, the little girl seemed happy with Gunter. That's when you remembered one of your previous dreams, the one where you were Penelope, being bullied by all those other kids.
Penelope had gotten used to playing on her own since none of the other kids would. In a way, it made sense that Penelope would be fine with Gunter. In her child mind, Gunter was her first friend; someone to play games with, not be afraid of.
"I gotta stop this." You whispered to yourself. Even if this was a dream, you figured if you could get Penelope away from Gunter it might help somehow.
You rushed down the stairs and in front of Gunter, halting his movements. Up close you could see Gunter had an ashen complexion, stringy grey hair, and sunken grey eyes. He stared down at you with ablank expression, he didn't seem surprised to see you.
"Let go of her." You demanded.
Gunter didn't say anything, he just stood their staring at you. Penelope gazed up at you, her green eyes holding a sinister glit to them.
"Are you gonna play with me?" Penelope asked you.
You felt dread wash over your body when she asked you to play with her. It felt like if you said yes, something terrible would happen. The air felt trapped in your lungs as youtried to speak.
"I-I can't." You managed to mumble out.
"You're just like everyone else." Penelope yelled. Her face took on a twisted appearance. Her eyes no longer held a light to them, instead they were empty. Tears of blood pricked the corners of her eyes and flowed down her cheeks, her mouth stretched into a wide grin showing off rows of pointy, yellow teeth.
"Just play with me." Penelope lunged forward.
---
You shot up out of bed, sweat covering you from head to toe, as you panted heavily.
"What's wrong?" Rosinante tiredly groaned from his side of the bed. Light illuminated the room as Rosinante turned on the lamp that was on the nightstand. He wrapped his arm around your shoulders and pulled you against his chest.
"I had a lucid dream I think? I'm not really sure now." You said as you caught your breath.
"Do want to tell me about it?" Rosinante asked. And so you did. You told him about how you could see yourself and Rosinante sleeping even though you were awake. That you thought Law had come home so you went to check on him, but it turned out to be Penelope and Gunter.
"I wanted to help her, get her away from Gunter, I thought it'd help somehow if I did. But, when she asked if I'd play with her, I felt... I felt really scared. As if something bad would happen if I said yes. She jumped at me and I woke up." You explained.
"That does sound scary. You're right we do need to help Penelope. Help her move on, so we can get back to normal and she can find peace. We just need to find the right way to do it." Rosinante said.
"Yeah, but how are we gonna do that?" You sighed. Maybe it was time you called psychic or a medium, you just knew that some could charge a lot for their services and turn out to be fakes. You didn't want to spend loads of money, just for nothing to change.
"I'm not sure what we're going to do, but we'll figure it out." Rosinante gave you an encouraging smile.
"You're right, we'll get through this. We can get ready for work though." You said as you looked at the clock on your nightstand. It was fifteen minutes before you'd usually get up for work, normally you'd lie back down if you woke up before your alarm, but you felt restless right. You needed to do something to take your mind off your strange dream, even if it was just getting ready for work.
----
"Morning, Mr. Newgate." You greeted your boss as he walked in. You already had tea, a light breakfast, and his medicine set up on his desk.
"Miss. (Y/N). How's your morning going?" Mr. Newgate stopped by your desk to chat for a minute.
"It's good. You have a meeting with the accountant team this afternoon." You told him as you took a quick glance at your calendar.
"Good. And next Friday I have a doctor's appointment in the morning, I'll be late coming into the office." Mr. Newgate said before he ambled into his office.
You quickly jot down his appointment onto your calendar before getting back to work. You hoped Mr. Newgate was getting better, his chats with you were usually longer than the one you just had. You wondered if he wasn't feeling all that well and he wanted to go sit down.
Just before lunch Marco came up to your desk holding his laptop. "Great, you're still here yoi. I wanted to show you something."
"What is it?" You moved your notebook and some files aside so Marco could set his laptop down.
"Just watch this yoi." Marco opened his screen to the video footage from the security cameras. From one of the little squares you could see yourself running to the elevator. In the other square you were running down the stairs.
"I already knew I would show up on the cameras. I'm just glad you're the one who reviews the footage." It wouldn't do you any good to be known as the office crazy lady. It looked like you were running from nothing.
"Look closer. Here in the bottom yoi." Marco rewinded the footage and you payed closer attention to where he was pointing. This time you noticed a small shadowy figure following behind you.
"I didn't know ghosts showed up on camera." You admitted.
"I read up on it a bit after I saw this. Ghost can show up on cameras, not always as a full apparition like this yoi. But, they can show up." Marco explained.
"It's annoying that she followed me to work. She did the same thing to Rosinante and Law." You sighed.
"I thought you said you got rid of her yoi?" Marco asked.
"We thought we did. But, she's still around."
"Hmm, let me make a few calls. I might know someone that can help yoi." Marco picked his laptop up and headed towards his office.
You wondered who it was he knew that could help you.
