Your words are so lame, Mother
And yours never make sense, SonNico got out of the car. Red and blue lights were flashing in the vicinity. Here, this place again. He hoped they could find him this time.
His wife stood next to him, her winter coat tightly wrapped around her, yet she shivered. "You didn't have to come with me, Leonie," her husband said, concerned.
But the blonde shook her head. "I can't leave you here alone."
How he loved his wife, even though she was afraid of almost everything. She never left him alone. Both of them approached the police cars. Nico was surprised to see so many ambulances.
"Nico, you're finally here," said an older voice. It was John, a familiar detective. He had been searching for Nico's lost twin for a while now. Normally, he was a nice and composed man, but this time, he looked very disheveled.
"We saw the fireworks and came here immediately," Nico explained, "But I think the circus is empty again?"
"No, we've found something. We found Niko," Nico couldn't believe it. Was he in a dream?
"W-what... is he okay?" Nico asked immediately, concerned. He could still vividly remember the day he last saw Niko. The boy had packed his things for a school trip. He had hugged Nico tightly and gone to school with a big smile. And he never came back.
"I... I'm sorry, kid," John said sadly, looking over at a gurney. Niko didn't want to believe it. There was a person lying on the gurney, covered with a white sheet. The young man slowly approached the gurney. He knew who was under there. He didn't want to believe it. He didn't want to look into his brother's lifeless eyes.
Nico wanted to remember his brother with his bright and lively face as the last memory. Tears streamed down his cheeks. "I'm so sorry," he cried, resting his head on Niko's chest. "I'm so... sorry."
Leonie had to watch her husband cry over the body. She had to hold back her own tears.
"I'm afraid I'm not entirely sure if this is the right one," John suddenly said beside her.
"What does that mean?" she asked, confused.
"Well, I don't want to sound crazy, but we found multiple Nikos. They all have the same wound and look almost identical. We even found the other missing people and some we've never seen before. But there was a second of every person that looked the same."
"But how is that possible? Every time we've been here, the whole circus was empty."
"I don't understand it myself. Only the missing people have wounds, but others who look like circus employees seemed to have fallen asleep and just never woke up. They died in their sleep."
Leonie couldn't make sense of it anymore. The last time they were here was just a few weeks ago. How could so many have died in just a few weeks? Even before she got together with Nico, Nico came to this circus. Right after the fireworks lit up the sky. It was somehow a sign. But every time they found nothing; the circus was empty. Except this time. She saw so many gurneys, so many bodies. These poor people.
"But we found a survivor," John suddenly said, pointing to a woman being questioned by two police officers. She was covered in blood, her hair completely disheveled. "Her name is Kira Andersson. We'll question her some more later, and if we find out anything, we'll let you know."
"Thank you, John," Leonie smiled softly. It was time to go home. Her husband had suffered enough today. She just hoped this would finally be the end of it all.The end...?
