jeremiah and avalon finally made it to brown university. the car ride felt like it went on for days, but it had only been a couple of hours.

when they arrived, he called belly to find out where she was.

it killed avalon to hear the way he talked to belly. she could tell they were still on good terms. she wanted to find out exactly what those terms were.

they met up with belly in front of conrad's dorm. she came over to them with three drinks.

"hey, i got us all some coffee." she smiled lightly and looked straight over to avalon.

jeremiah took his coffee. "thanks bells." he said before taking a sip.

"oh um, i'm good. thanks." avalon hugged herself awkwardly.

"ar- are you sure?" belly asked.

avalon just nodded and walked ahead of the two. belly ended up throwing the drink away.

before they walked into the dorm, jeremiah asked them both if they knew what room conrad was in.

"i know he's on the top floor. that's about it." belly told him.

jeremiah looked over to avalon. she just shrugged her shoulders and looked down at the floor.

he sighed, rolling his eyes. "alright then. top floor it is." he opened the door for the two girls.

they made their way to the top floor and looked around. "here we are." belly pointed to a door with a whiteboard that read 'c. fisher.'.

"yeah." jeremiah sighed and knocked on the door, which caused it to open.

he took a peek inside the room, "hello?"

there was nobody in there. it looked like conrad had just got up and left without a trace. except for the fact that his bed was made.

"things can't be so bad if his bed is made." belly chuckled.

jeremiah and avalon ignored her and looked around the room for clues to where he could've gone.

a random guy walked into the room holding a towel and wearing a robe and shorts, "um excuse me! this is my room that you're rifling through."

"oh, sorry man. i'm conrad's brother. we talked on the phone earlier." he shook hands with conrad's roommate.

he nodded, "oh yeah, jeremiah right?"

"yep." jere answered.

"alright, cool."

"so uh, connie hasn't been back, has he?" jere asked while looking around the room.

"nope, i haven't seen him since thursday. he texted me this morning though asking if i could take bio notes for him." he explained, "and i can't really complain because i've spent the whole year copying off his shit." he said, chuckling.

"um, do you think you could call conrad from your phone and see if he picks up?" belly asked.

"ah yeah for sure." he called conrad from his phone, and there was no answer, "straight to voicemail."

all of a sudden, there came a female voice from the hallway. "trusky, did i leave my sweater in here?" she walked into the room.

"no idea, but hey, sophie might know where conrad went. they're pretty tight." he pointed to the girl.

belly and avalon both looked the girl up and down. avalon snapped out of the jealousy quickly, "hey sophie. do you happen to know where conrad went?"

she rolled her lips, crossing her arms. "um, i think he's going to hang out with his cousin at the beach or something."

the three immediately knew what she was talking about. he was going to cousins beach.

"well wherever he went, he was pretty heated before he left." trusky told them.

"wait, what do you mean?" jeremiah asked.

trusky started to rub lotion onto his arms. "he was on the phone with someone and he started like yelling and shit!"

"do you know who he was yelling at?" avalon wondered.

"no idea. probably the government who's watching us through our devices as we speak."

jere and belly looked at each other in confusion.

"alright well, we should get going." jeremiah suggested and started walking towards the door.

"i didn't catch your names." he said to the girls.

"oh, uh, i'm belly. this is avalon." she awkwardly introduced them.

"no shit." he chuckled.

"what?" avalon asked with her arms crossed.

"ah nothing. i've said too much. it was nice to meet you guys." he led them out of the room and closed the door.

"well that was weird." avalon blurted.

"yeah." jere paused, "let's go."

before they made it to the steps, trusky ran out of the room to find them.

"hey wait up!" he shouted. "when you guys find him, tell him he has to be back for his bio final on thursday or he fails the class." he handed conrad's book bag over to jeremiah.

"wait, seriously?" avalon asked, concerned. she and conrad were always good with school. they would even talk on the phone to study together some nights.

"good luck!" he saluted them and went back to his dorm room.

when they got to jeremiah's car, he threw conrad's book bag into the backseat.

"why would conrad run off to cousins? i don't think he's missed a day of school in his life, even when our mom was sick." he leaned against his car.

"yeah, it's not like him at all." avalon crossed her arms.

"he had to have been yelling at my dad on the phone. i mean, who else could it be?" he wondered.

avalon shrugged.

belly leaned onto the car next to jere, "maybe this is all a misunderstanding. he could be in cousins surfing the day away." she guessed.

"i honestly don't want to get in the middle of whatever is going on with him. but if something were to happen to him, i wouldn't be able to forgive myself-"

belly cut him off, "hey! nothing's gonna happen to conrad." she rested her hand on his arm.

the two of them connected eyes for what felt like an eternity to avalon. she rolled her eyes noticeably. belly looked away from jere immediately and let out an awkward cough.

"i guess i'm off to cousins." he said as he stood up, no longer leaning on his car.

"you mean 'we're' off to cousins." belly nudged his shoulder.

"you guys should head home. i can do this on my own." he told them.

"we know you can, but you shouldn't have to." avalon stepped up. deep down, all she wanted to do was go home. but she knew she couldn't. as much as jeremiah hated her right now, she knew he would need her. maybe even conrad needed her too. she just wanted to help them, and hopefully fix their friendships in the meantime.

"well then, let's go" he vaguely smiled at avalon.

she nodded at him and got into the backseat of the car. there she was, with the two people who used to be her dearest friends. one being her first love. yet, they had both betrayed her. she could only hope that she was making the right decision going with them.
