I wake up in a bed that's not my own. My scars are closed. He healed them, but he left the marks themselves. I get up and find Conan making food. "Morning," he says not looking up. "I'm sorry for my outburst," I say sliding on my cuffs again. "Thanks for opening up. You're a hard one to read," he states. I simply nod. "I have to go," I say walking to the door.
What was I thinking? Telling him all of that for what? I run to the practice field and start punching dummies. What feels like minutes go by until I feel pure exhaustion set in. "Fal!" I hear. I look at my terribly bloody knuckles. Then stare at Gwenni on the stairs. "I rest my arms on my legs to breathe. The dummy looks like he was in a bloodbath. I walk over to her slowly. "Fallon let's get dinner," she smiles. I nod and walk with her. "Why are you covered in smeared blood?" she asks concerned. "Cut my hand when I was training," I lie. My once sleek ponytail now has hair falling out of the hair tie. My cuffs are still in place but also painted in my own blood. I spot Conan across the dining hall, and I quickly step on the other side of Gwenni. What happened to you?" the voice behind us says. "A little cut," I reply knowing that voice too well. "Omg hi you guys!!" Gwenni waves to someone. "Hey come sit with us," the girls wave back. "Me and Fallon will be right there!" she smiles. "Oh we only have space for one," the girl fake frowns. "It's fine Gwenni go," I insist. She nods and runs off. "I'm going for a swim," I huff and walk down to the pool.
He follows me. "Conan, what do you want?" I sigh. "I want to know that you're okay," he grabs my wrist. I pull away and slide into the pool. I hiss when the salt water hits my torn skin. He sits at the edge. "What did I do?" he asks. "Nothing," I say. "Well, you're avoiding me," he says. "No," I say. "Fine," he stands up. "You just always come here when you have an attitude. It's fine though don't talk to me not like you have many options but whatever," he walks away. I float on my back. Guys are such assholes...especially him. "Gryffon," I hear someone bark. "Yes, coach?" I inquire. "Headmaster wants you in her office," he says. "Okay let me change," I nod. "No time," he says. I huff getting out of the pool.
Coach and I walk into her office. "Of course, you're not presentable Ms. Gryffon," the headmaster says. "Apologies," I bite. "Since there have been so many deaths lately we have to pull in our best from the academy. We're mostly using senior students," she explains. "So why am I here?" I raise an eyebrow. "I don't like your attitude but you're one of the best, and you have good intentions," she hesitates. "You're sending me to die," I whisper. "No, I'm sending you to fight. This is your chance Gryffon. I know you're doing it for your brother. He died because we weren't prepared. I'm sending you back there," she says closing a folder. "Huntsville?" I ask shocked. She nods. I have the opportunity to defend his death. "Thank you," I say staring into her eyes. She nods. "Get packed. You leave tomorrow. The battalion's send-off is at eight in the morning," she says. I nod and rush out of the room. I run to my dorm as fast as I can. I throw all of my weapons, clothes, and necessary survival items into a duffel bag.
"Why are you making so much noise?" Gwenni asks bursting into my room. I was in the middle of cleaning my face after my shower. "What is that?" she points at the bag. "Headmaster Thornbury is sending me to Huntsville," I say. "Why? We're only students?!" she panics. "They needed more people because of all the deaths so she's picking the seniors and me," I admit. "Fallon you're going to die," Gwenni tears up. "Thanks," I let out a laugh. "I'm serious," she whines. "I'm doing it for Filipe," I glare.
