It is pitch black and the night sky was starless. The light of the full moon was the only source of light for the children to see just a bit through the dense forest. They were standing in a open space while Zoë was trying to make a fire for the torch she brought with her

Using two rocks and tied some dried grass to the torch to make it work better

"Are you finished yet?!" Lily asked impatiently

"Alright, alright! Relax! Uncle Sid only taught me this two months ago, geez" Zoë argued as she finally saw a spark and gently blowed on it

And just like that, they had light and warmth. Zoë picked up the torch and could finally find their way through the dark forest. All four of them stayed close together while all they could hear were crickets, the wind blowing and frogs

"Well, where are the pumpkins?" Chase asked as they started looking around and Mitch was holding onto Zoë hand tightly

"It's pretty much scary, huh, Lily? I don't like scary" Mitch said with a shaky voice as Lily nodded and had her left side pretty much pressed against Mitch's

"Maybe... maybe I can ask Mom to just make apple porridge instead of pumpkin soup" Zoë suggested as Lily and Mitch both liked that and the three turned around in attempt to go back

"No, you won't"

Chase's answer made them stop as they turned to see Chase standing there with unpleasant expressions in his face, before he continued talking

"Crybabies. I want pumpkin soup"

Tired of her brother's stubbornness, Lily tried to reason with him

"Chase..."

"I thought that the Pumpkin King was just a silly story" Chase grinned as Lily growled lowly, before answering

"Yeah, back at home it is. And here, it isn't"

The faint cry of an owl made them shriek as Zoë, Lily and Mitch huddled together in a tight bundle. Chase scoffed as he stood up and said

"I'm gonna look for pumpkins" and then walked off

Zoë reluctantly followed after him with the torch while Lily and Mitch still had their eyes closed tightly and hurried after Zoë when they saw her walking off with the torch. Not knowing they were being watched from two corners. One from a tree, one from a bush

The trees hid the figure's small frame as it disappeared, but the figure from the bush remained, not hiding its low growl from its throat. Two red dots shining from the black void and only retreated when it heard the kids yell

Mitch trembled as he covered his eyes with his trunk while Lily and Chase hid under his, making themselves small and as tight as a ball. Zoë just chuckled as she lifted the torch higher and illuminated the skeleton of a big carnivore. A cave lion

"It's okay, guys. It's just a skeleton and no, it won't come to life" Zoë joked as they opened their eyes and sighed in relief

"Phew!... I knew that it wasn't alive" Chase snickered as Lily added

"Me too"

To which Chase just scoffed. Mitch carefully took the torch from Zoë and shone it further from the skeleton. There was a huge black stain that surrounded the skeleton as they breathed in amazement and fascination

"What must've happened here?" Chase breathed as Zoë answered for him

"I think it used to be a quite unfortunate cave lion hunting during a thunderstorm"
