Catelyn married Lord Eddard Stark after the rebels won the Battle of the Bells, without ever having seen him before their wedding day. She married Eddard in the same ceremony as her sister Lysa wed the elder Lord Jon Arryn. Eddard and Jon played key roles in the rebellion, and a fortnight after the wedding both men rode off to war again.
Catelyn remained at Riverrun, spending the first year of her marriage separated from her husband. However, Catelyn had conceived a child during their wedding night, and she gave birth to Sara Stark at Riverrun, nine months after her wedding.
After the war had ended, Catelyn and young Sara traveled to Winterfell, where she found out that Eddard's bastard son, Jon Snow, had already been set up in the castle. While Catelyn had always been aware that men fathered bastards, and had not been surprised to learn of Jon's existence, Jon arriving at Winterfell before Catelyn and Robb had hurt her.
Because of this, the two were forced to make one more male heir and then Catelyn refused to see him and she kept him from seeing his young daughter too stating "Girls will inherit no titles nor land. A son shall be the next Warden of the North, but Sara was hers alone"
Ned continued to raise his bastard at Winterfell whilst Cat fell pregnant with a son. The two eventually became civil and even fell in love. Though Catelyn never truly got used to having Jon around.
And when Ned was finally allowed see his daughter, they became inseparable. Even if Catelyns words about daughters were right, Ned never treated her any different. The two went on to have two more daughters and two more sons after Rob and Sara. And they were as happy as they could be.
But that would all change soon when the king and queen of the Seven Kingdoms travelled to the North.
