I don't think I could keep up with the twist and turns of this place. It had limited windows and more doors. I wasn't paying attention to where we were going. We passed a few Nuns on the way but I looked at none. I wasn't eager to see my roommates neither was I interested in making new friends.
We finally stopped in front of a door and I finally looked up. Turning my back, I could see that this hallway had few windows. Sister Lily knocked before she opened the door quietly. I followed in after her only to be hit by the bright light of the sunset. The room was quite spacious with five single beds. The beds weren't in an arranged pattern but the room was neat. I was the last person to enter the room. I could tell cause every bed was occupied except for the one close to the window at the extreme.
I took my suitcase to the bed side. There was no need to arrange anything as there were no closets. The room had two doors. The bathroom was at the left side of the room, adjacent to the entrance. The room wasn't painted. In fact no where was painted. The building was made of concrete stones.I sat on my bed after putting my suitcase underneath it. I began to study the girls in the room. I was surprised to see the girl of earlier in this room. I guess it was in the order you come that the room was been given. Her bed wasn't far from mine. She was staring at the concrete floor with so much interest.
Moving my gaze away from her, I looked at the girl whose bed was a bit closer to hers. The girl was brown skin. She laid on the bed with her back on the bed board. She was staring at my girl of earlier. I bet she was wondering how long she would continue to stare at the floor. The dark girl turned to make eye contact with me as I was staring at her. She kept staring at me. It was like we were communicating with our eyes. She looked at me and the girl severally, back and forth. I could tell what she was doing.
The other two girls in the room were also looking at this same girl. One looked older, she seemed more mature than the rest of us. The other was the opposite. She looked really small. Everyone in this room would be older than her. Although the youngest, she wasn't as naive and shy as my girl of earlier. We all kept exchanging looks at each other and at my girl from earlier. Sister Lily who had been in the room the whole time finally cleared her throat at us. We all looked at her and then at my girl of earlier. She hadn't even looked up. The dark girl scoffed and before I knew it, everyone in the room was laughing. My girl of earlier who was the only one in confusion, immediately raised her head. She was looking around to find what was so funny. Little did she know that she was the laughing stock.
" Ok girls, you all need to freshen up . I will come by later to inform you about dinner but till then, make your self at home." Sister Lily told us.She had just prepared to leave after we all gave her our nods but, she stopped right before she opened the door.
" And one more thing. When ever you hear the bell start praying."
Sister Lily left the room leaving everyone in confusion. It wouldn't be hard to keep up with such instruction but why the instruction in the first place?" Since I'm way cooler and bolder than y'all, I'm gonna introduce first." The dark girl started.
" I'm Grace Blackwood. I'm eighteen years old. I live with my mom. My father is in jail and my mother is a seamstress. I am a welfy of my diocese. I saw my first vision three weeks ago and my second four days ago. I was brought here by my mum and our Parish's Most Reverend. I never liked him though. He has a thing my mum and never really accepted me. I guess now that I'm gone, he'll probably have his way ". She said, all in one breath.
I was really impressed by her boldness. The way she said it all out was like she had been looking for someone to air it out to. I wasn't the only one in the state of shock, everyone was. I envied such boldness at times. I wanted to be next but the older girl beat me to it.
" My name is Mary Hilder. I turned twenty, two weeks ago. I live in the country side with my parents. My father is a farmer and my mother is a chartered accountant in our town's area. I was one step away from college before the visions started. I had my first vision a year ago but I ignored it. I had like five before I came clean on it. I'm not the type to argue with my elders so I agreed to this so, yeah. I'm here."
Waw, another amazing story. I don't think my life story would beat that. I mean she was this close to college while I never went to high school. She must be really sad inside.
" My name is Madeline Matters. I'm seventeen years old. I live in a small town in the East with my father, well a Reverend not my biological father. I'm an unwanted child. My mother dropped my by the steps of the church and a Father picked me up. He brought me up with a little help from the Church. I never went to high school, only stopped at middle school cause father wasn't financially stable for that. Our town doesn't have highschools. I had my first vision two months ago and my second three weeks ago. I cried when Father Left me here. I know he's not my biological father but he was always there for me, all the time ".
I felt like crying after talking about my self. I didn't want to look like a weakling and get early sympathy after all, we all have a rough life and being a maybe orphan didn't give me the upper hand.
There was a moment of silence after my story was told. The silence was not because of my life story rather, it was for the next person to start. It should have been my girl from earlier's turn but she seemed rather hesitant. I wouldn't expect the youngest looking girl to start, she was paying her respect as a junior. Since my girl from earlier wasn't forthcoming, the youngest girl began her own story." Hello ... So my name is Priya Silkman. From my name you could guess my ethnicity . I'm part Indian. I am thirteen years old. I live with my father and my auntie. My mother passed two months ago. I saw my first vision two weeks before my mother's death funny enough that was my first vision. I didn't quite get the vision as it was not straight to the point. I had two more visions before I told my aunt. My father is a merchant so he's rarely around, so I told my aunt first . Both my parents are Catholic. My mother's family were the only Catholic family in their tribe. I miss my mom. My sister is married and my brother works with my father, so I'm always alone with my auntie. My aunt was so happy when I told her about my visions. That would only mean I'll be sent away from home and she would take my mother's place without trouble. I tried to run but I was locked up in my room two weeks before today. My mom's death was an accident you know. If I had understood my visions earlier, I would have prevented her death but the damage has already been done, I guess ". She sniffled as she had already began to cry.
I felt for Priya and she was so young. Mary went to console her as she was the eldest. All I and Grace could do was say sorry and try calming her through our words. My girl from earlier was just a spectator to all that had been going on.
After a few minutes, Priya stopped crying. She was calm and alright. It was now my girl from earlier's turn to start her introduction and backstory. It was surprisingly rude as all she did was lay on her bed and turn her face away from us. She didn't speak or do anything. I wasn't too surprised but I was really annoyed by this. This was like a slap to the face to everyone else who told their backstory. I wasn't as angry as Grace. She could be said to be the angriest of all of us. The way she glared at my girl from earlier, it was as though her glare could end her life. Mary and Priya just minded their business, pretending not to know what transpired. After a while of minding our business, Grace came to my bed side as I was laying down and asked.
" Would you like to explore the place?"
I thought about it. Sister Lily didn't say anything about exploring the place, and us being cooked up in silence with a snub in the room was really not exhilarating. It doesn't sound like a bad idea after all, Sister Lily did say we should make ourselves at home. Without anymore thought, I have in.
Grace and I walked out the room like we knew where we were going. By the time we left, Priya was already fast asleep, Mary was really engrossed in her embroidery and my girl from earlier was still in the same position as earlier. I guess Grace and I didn't have anything to pass time with.
