New School, New Me

It was a humid, mellow night. The warm orange sky was just setting in the distance, casting a slight beam of dying light over a group of three teenagers sitting on a stoop in front of the pavement. Duncan, who usually had a strikingly sharp face, had his features softened as he exhaled, smoke pouring out of his lungs. He passed his spliff to his friend, Geoff, who did the same as Duncan before passing it to Brody.

"Woah, bro, I still can't believe we're going into sixth form tomorrow"

Geoff sighed, his eyebrows raising as his mind straightened out.

"Fuck knows how I even got in" Duncan mumbled, as well stuck in an endless stream of his own thoughts.

"At least we're all going to the same one" Brody chimed in. Duncan was friends with Geoff from secondary school and had only been introduced to Geoff's best friend Brody today, as they were all attending the same school tomorrow for the first time.

The three teenage boys continued smoking, watching the sky, the ground, each other, and anyone who passed by.

Duncan, who was zoning out, was brought to attention as he observed, through droopy, red eyes, a tall girl, around the same age as him, walking towards them.

She had long, slim legs which resembled those of a super model, molding into bigger thighs and hips, which were only thinly covered by khaki green short shorts, showing off her slim, pale stomach, her silver belly button piercing, adorned with a small pink jewel. The teenage girl was wearing a small, wine-red crop top, with straps that crossed over her chest. She had a small, silver chain on and large shiny silver studs. She had only flip flops on, holding a Tesco's plastic shopping bag with some food in it, and her long, straight raven hair fell around her waist, covering her face which sported only some natural makeup, glistening from the long day she had.

Duncan's two thick eyebrows knitted tightly together, before he raised one, looking at the girl up and down with his deep blue eyes, and his usually deep voice softened to a tone of adoration as he snickered maliciously at the attractive girl.

"Meet you by the park, gorgeous"

The girl did not hesitate to reply with,

"Drop dead, you skeez"

In an unbothered tone, as she continued to make her way home, walking- eyes forward, nose high and shoulders raised with confidence.

Heather Kasuga felt inclined to be annoyed. She was forced to go out and buy her younger sisters' ingredients for her Food Tech class the next day at eleven at night! Who forgets to tell you about that until eleven?! And some stupid boy had made a comment on her while she was walking home, not that she was not used to creeps. It had become more of a problem, recently, at least.

However, Heather couldn't help but feel nervous. Not annoyed. She felt undeniably nervous. Heather had always been smart, so she knew to achieve a completely fresh start she had to move schools. She just couldn't do it anymore. She had spent her entire existence preparing for her fresh start; an opportunity that she now had. She had spent the majority of her pre-teen years wishing to change herself, and, surely, she had transformed from a fat, pimply, shell of a girl to a drop-dead-gorgeous woman. And slowly, but surely, all her confidence came with it.

Yet, everyone in her school had still bullied her. They had for years. On a daily basis, she felt horrible. Like a tired, walking zombie incapable of feeling anything but coldness and hatred towards the world.

Slowly, Heather Kasuga had overcome the bullying and made new friends. She was content, enough, but she still yearned for a new start.

So, now's her chance. A new school, new people, a new chance. Heather was nervous because she didn't know how to act. But she masked her anxiety in fake confidence; and it worked too.
