Yorei Fujita's home was not much, not to her at least. But even the luxury she grew with, she was not ignorant to who saw her home as much more. There were people who would kill for just one night under a rooftop with a warm meal, she, unlike those who lived in bliss in the exact same home, knew at least that.

It was styled traditionally, with maids that waited on hand and foot and guards that stood tall for days on end. Mats covered the floor, and sliding doors occupied privacy to every room. Including her secluded room, deep and hidden, and locked away by the choice of her mother and father.

On most days, she would be stowed away in her room due to the lock on her door and the guards outside. Reading the same old books until she could memorize each page word for word with her eyes closed. She had no windows, no breeze, no natural light. And for years, the closest she had gotten to the outside world was the bathroom down the hall.

But today wasn't like most days, today was the day she would be getting married.

"Everything must be perfect."

Her mother's touch felt like ice to her pale skin. She hummed under her breath, a song that was unfamiliar to Yorei's ears. Her mother's nails were like talons, raking through strands of Yorei's black hair. It almost looked like a panther lovingly grooming a little kitten.

The humming stopped.

"You remember what you must do, yes?" Her mother, Hiromi Fujita, spoke through the heavy silence. Her talons twitched in place before resuming their pattern. "You won't disappoint me, right? Little dove?"

Yorei felt the buzz of a hum climb up her throat and quickly swallowed it down. Her mother hated when she gave nonverbal responses. She saw it as attitude, rebellion, even. "Yes, mother."

Yorei stared into her reflection and watched as the ends of her mother's lips twitched slightly. But the twitch was gone and her lips were back thinned when the girl blinked.

"You need more lipstick." The woman clicked her tongue.

Finally, Yorei was freed from her mother's claw like grip. She didn't move from her spot though, still planted on the ground with her legs tucked under her body and her hands laid gently in her lap. As her mother rummaged through her bag, Yorei looked down to her hands.

She stared hard at her ring finger, the finger that would soon wear a metal band decorated with pretty jewls. The finger that would bound her to another, leaving her tied down to the side of an man with no say. She would no longer be able to run freely through the lavender field outside of her home, nor would she be able to roam the dirt trails that led to the unknown.
