Time passed before Yorei could blink.

As the weeks turned into months, which later turned into years, Yorei had grown as a person alongside the boy that saved her.

Monkey D. Luffy.

He had become someone she let her guard down for without even noticing. Something about him just made her shoulders lose and her eyes soften. He was full of determination. Every goal he set up, he worked to achieve. And he never seemed to forget about Yorei, who had assumed he would lose interest in her like the toy ships he played with in his free time. But he never did, if he made a new discovery, learned a new fact, found a new shell, Yorei was the first to know.

Yorei had become his best friend.

As she grew, she learned about Shanks too. The old man liked to drink and laugh with his crew until he lost the ability to walk straight. He liked to tease people to get a reaction, she also noted with annoyance, as she had become one of his many targets.

Luffy was another, as he was particularly hot headed as a child. Though he never showed any attitude to Makino, and definitely not his best friend Yorei. But Shanks didn't seem to mind when Luffy huffed or gritted his teeth in the captain's direction. Something that happened very often, she might add.

Yorei had also discovered how good Shanks fought with his sword, even with only his right arm. The loss of his left limb didn't stop him from being a pirate, it didn't even slow him down. It was one of the many things Yorei admired about him (though she'd never say it out loud), Shanks never gave up. If a problem was in his way, he wouldn't sit and complain, he learned to adapt with it, to make the best out of the situation.

A few sparring matches Shanks crew would have that Yorei and Luffy watched in their free time, soon led to Yorei pushing Shanks to train her and Luffy.

It was more of a deal. If Yorei was able to get Shanks' sword out of his grasp, he would have to train her and Luffy. Though, if Shanks was able to get Yorei's weapon out of her hand, both her and Luffy had to drop "the whole being a pirate" thing, as he put it.

While Yorei was fine with training by herself, the look on Luffy's face had her agreeing anyways.

(Translate: she can't say no to him)

The man had been utterly surprised at the skills Yorei possessed. Quick reflexes and undeniable strength. Yorei also had the ability to adapt to any weapon she was given, he learned that the girl preferred using a fan, oddly enough.

Though it made sense when she used the damn thing so skillfully.

"Ya' pack quite a punch, kid." He commented to her. Shanks was sweating hard, red strands stuck to his neck uncomfortably, he fiddled with the white collar of his white shirt. While Yorei was slightly breathless from the continuous back and forth. The sun had never felt hotter.
