His words lingered, a turbulent storm veiled behind the cool facade of his utterance. The shiver that raced down your spine was an unwelcome guest amidst the storm that brewed within, the finality of his tone resonating through the heavy silence.

"Why the hell do you care what Greg or anyone else for that matter—would do to me?" you demanded, the tremor in your voice betraying the tempest of confusion and desperation to unravel the mystery that veiled his emotions.

As you studied his face, a landscape that seldom betrayed the thoughts that scurried beneath, you ached for a glimmer of clarity amidst the thick fog of unsaid words and undeclared feelings.

"You talk about it like it's personal, Ghost. Is it?"

The stoic mask on Ghost's face held firm, yet the fleeting tremor in his eyes betrayed a surge of emotion, quickly concealed beneath layers of stoicism. The heavy veil of tension between you two seemed to thicken with every passing heartbeat, every unsaid word. A flame kindled within you, its origin unknown, its essence a blend of anger, longing, or perhaps a tinge of hope.

"No. I just don't want you getting hurt," Ghost's voice cut through the silence, a hint of annoyance feathering the edges of his words.

His reply landed with a hollow thud, an echo that resonated through the cavern of disappointment that had silently carved itself within you.

"That's your job, isn't it?" you retorted, the sting of hurt camouflaged by a sheen of sarcasm. "To not let any of us get hurt?"

Your gaze shifted away from him, drifting into the void as you grappled with a cocktail of relief and a faint sting of letdown. Did a part of you yearn for a different answer, a glimpse into a realm of emotions unexplored?

"Good to know you're so devoted to your job, then," you remarked, the facade of nonchalance barely concealing the tremor in your voice as you emptied the remnants of your glass.

Silence, the only witness to the uncharted territory that loomed ahead, settled between you as Ghost's stare bore into the veil of bravado you donned. The facade of emotions that guarded his soul seemed impenetrable, yet the yearning for a sliver of transparency held you captive.

His form inched closer, the distance between you two a field of untamed sentiments, his breath a ghostly caress against your skin. His lips parted, a preamble to the words that could bridge the chasm or thrust you further into the abyss of unreciprocated longing.

And yet, the words remained imprisoned within, a captive of the silence that seemed to deepen with every hesitant heartbeat. The unspoken dialogue between your souls hovered in the quiet room, a tale yearning to be unveiled yet shrouded in a cloak of hesitation and unrequited understanding.

The burden of his silence was almost palpable, churning the frustration that simmered within you into a roaring inferno. The enigma of Ghost's reticence gnawed at your patience. His eyes were a tome of unspoken words, yet he chose silence over revelation.

With a swivel, you turned away from him, your eyes catching the bartender's, signalling for another shot.

"Shot of tequila, please," your voice echoed through the silence, reaching Ghost's ears but avoiding his gaze.

As the bartender complied, the pouring liquid seemed to stir the whirlpool of emotions that raged within you, Ghost's gaze anchoring them into a storm of confusion. With a swift tilt, the tequila coursed down, its fiery touch momentarily eclipsing the storm.

The bitterness mirrored the essence of the night. With a resolve carving through the disarray, you slid off the stool, your fingers wrapping around your purse.
