I would be moving in 24 hours. The idea of it still hasn't settled in and things still felt off. But that didn't change the fact that I felt giddy knowing that from now on I would be living in a mansion.
I had only a box of things in front of me. I was able to fit my used sketch pads, pencils, and books in that one box. I had a suitcase I once found in a second-hand store where I was able to store all of my clothes inside. I was trying to make my life easier by using as few things as I could to store my things. It was easier than I thought. Only a box and a suitcase. Maybe I should feel sorry for myself at that fact but I knew better than that.
I left the two next to my door and couldn't help but stare at them for a while. As if that image was actually confirming, telling me 'this is it, you're leaving.'
I sighed and let a smile take over my lips before stepping out of the apartment and heading downstairs and straight to Mr. Keen's office. I knocked on the door and not even two seconds later, he was ushering me in.
"Something you wanted to discuss, Jordan?" He asked with a grin, taking his reading glasses off and setting them aside.
I ran my sweaty hands through my pants, willing for them to feel dry but for some reason, I was feeling nervous, and when I felt nervous, my hands sweat. "I um, actually, I will be moving out," I told him, smiling at him.
He instantly furrowed his eyebrows. "Are you okay, Jordan? The month isn't up yet, you still have time."
I smiled at his concern. "I'm fine Mr. Keen, I just found a job that requires me to move there. Don't worry, I'll be back soon to pay three months' worth of rent. I can sign a contract or something."
Mr. Keen smiled at that and nodded. "I'll miss you around here Jordan, there are not many young souls around here to make me feel alive," he laughed. "I guess I'll have to put up with Johnson by myself from now on, huh?" He joked, successfully getting a laugh out of me.
We conversed for a while more, Mr. Keen explaining the procedures before we both stood up and he hugged me. Hesitantly, I put my arms around him, taking in the fatherly warmth he was offering. I found myself tearing up, it's been years since I felt this way. "Take care okay, son?" I nodded. "If you ever need something, you have an old man right here willing to help you." We separated and I saw the sad smile he gave me. I returned it, promising to visit him one day before stepping out of the office.
I hadn't realized how sad and hard it was to actually leave the place that had been my shelter for the past two years. It wasn't my home but it was the one place that gave me things that I needed. A roof over my head, a bed, a shower, and water. I hadn't realized that it had also given me fatherly love from someone.
When I arrived on my floor and I was in front of my door, I glanced at the one next door. I wondered if James was inside right now and if he would hate me if I didn't say goodbye. I wondered if he would care when he woke up and I was no longer in the room next door. With a sigh, I opened my door and stepped inside one last time.
-----
Mr. Lewis insisted he come pick me up before my first lecture the next day. I thought that was too troubling considering that my first lecture was at 9 but he had a way with words. In the end, he was able to convince me.
I found myself outside the door next to mine, knocking on it and hoping for the person inside to come out. When the door finally opened to reveal James with an eyebrow raised up, my breath hitched, I had no idea what to say. Would he think I was stupid for coming to tell him I was moving? There was no more going back.
He eyed the box in my hand and the suitcase next to me, realization dawning on him. "I just thought to let you know that I'll be moving. Just so you don't report me as missing or something," I said playfully, lighting the mood successfully.
"Damn, I never thought this day would come," James laughed, leaning on the door frame. "I'll miss you around, Lucky, you have my word."
I rolled my eyes. "I'll let it go this time," I mumbled. "I guess this is goodbye," I shrugged, looking at him.
"I have your number, I'll call you sometime. Just to check in and shit, you know."
"Do what you want, Johnson." We stayed quiet for a while, I looked down at my shoes while I felt his gaze on me. "Hard to admit, but I'll actually miss you," I laugh dryly.
"You know that I actually do consider you my friend, right?" He asked seriously.
I looked up at him and grinned. I didn't. I thought both of us knew that we were simply just neighbors but I guess somewhere inside I actually did think of him as my friend. I had just been denying it to myself. "I'll see you sometime, James."
"See you around, Lucky."
With that, I turned around, grabbed my suitcase's handle, and walked away.
-----
Getting the suitcase down the stairs was harder than I thought, I'll admit. Once I was at the bottom, in the lobby, I went to say one more goodbye to Mr. Keen before stepping out of the building.
I took a deep breath and went to Mr. Lewis who was already waiting outside a black car.
"Good morning, Mr. Lewis," I said, my lips tugged up.
"Good morning, Jordan. Would that be all?" He asked, gesturing at the things in my hands. I nodded in response. "Okay, let's put this in the trunk and then hop on."
We did just that and when we got inside the car, I was glad that he didn't try to get much of a conversation out of me. The radio was on, allowing for there to not be any silence and I was glad that we weren't awkward with each other so the ride was actually quite pleasant.
The way to the mansion felt significantly shorter as we rode the car. I soon started to see familiar streets and I will be honest, I was quite excited. I let all my insecurities regarding this job to the back of my head and just let myself enjoy it. I was moving to a place I always dreamed of, it was beautiful every way I turned so I would just enjoy it for now.
When we arrived, Mr. Lewis pressed a button which instantly opened the gates. He drove the car all the way to the front door of the house and parked before unbuckling and getting out. I got out a second later, following after him.
"Angelica will be here soon to escort you to your room," he told me as he unloaded my things. "I'd like to officially welcome you to the Sawyer Mansion."
Just as he said that someone stepped out of the house. I was able to quickly recognize him. He was the one that Mr. Sawyer had been chasing the day he dropped his drink at me. The newcomer had auburn colored hair and blue eyes, he was taller than me though not as much as Khael. His lips were drawn into a soft smile and his jaw was sharp enough to cut.
"You must be Jordan?" He questioned.
Before I could answer, gunshots were heard and I was being pulled down to the floor. My eyes widened and I stayed frozen, unable to comprehend what was happening. I started hyperventilating; my breath got caught in my throat and I felt as if I was about to choke. The sound of the shots was nearly deafening but when I turned to look at Mr. Lewis, he was pointing a gun and firing it mercilessly. When I turned to look at the other boy, he had a fierce expression and was doing the same thing.
How could they just have guns on them?
I didn't have much time to dwell on the question as I was being pulled once again.
