WHEN THE SCHOOL bell rang, signaling the end of the school day, River stayed behind to collect transfer scripts from her teachers before joining Ginny and Maxine, who had been standing with Hunter.

"I was just gonna ask if you wanna maybe hang later tonight, but..." River heard Hunter say as she approached the group.

"Oh!" Ginny said, a look of surprise crossing her face.

"No, she can hang," Maxine chimed in, coming to the rescue swiftly.

River stood there, smiling in amusement at the awkward tension hanging in the air.

"But you just said..." Hunter began, clearly confused.

Maxine dismissively waved her hands as she retorted, "It's the worst show, Hunter. Once the cast turned 30, it was just sad."

"Okay, so, would you want to then?" Hunter asked Ginny.

"Uh-huh. Sure," Ginny replied awkwardly.

"Great. It's a date," Hunter said enthusiastically.

Ginny glanced between her smiling sister and Hunter, and she hesitated before asking, "A date? You mean as friends?"

"Or as a date," Hunter replied.

Awkwardly, Ginny looked at Hunter with a smile and said, "Um, okay. Yeah, let's do that."

"Cool," Hunter responded before walking away, leaving Maxine, Ginny, and a laughing River behind.

"Look at you go, Texas," Maxine said with excitement in her voice.

Ginny smiled as she exclaimed, "I have a date."

"You'll need to borrow something to wear since all your clothes are horrible," Maxine teased.

River playfully shoved Maxine as she retorted, "Rude!"

"No offense, just from what I've seen so far. I'm assuming," Maxine added, turning to Ginny and dramatically expressing, "I'm very excited. I'm dying."

River zoned out as Ginny and Maxine continued their conversation. She noticed a familiar black convertible pulling into the school parking lot. River waved goodbye to Marcus, who had been standing with Padma, and headed toward the car where her mother emerged, dressed from head to toe like a suburban mom.
