the sleep over!
chapter nine✿
⎯⎯⎯ the one where the millers slowly join the community.
✿THE DAY PASSED QUICKLY for River as she settled into her first day of work at The Blue Farm Cafe. Joe, the cafe's owner, took the time to teach her how to operate the cash register while Ginny received training from another employee on customer service and serving.
"Okay, select coffee. Now select total, and run the card. Good, they're gonna sign, then you flip it back and hit enter," Joe instructed River, who followed his guidance with a smile. "Great, you're a natural," he complimented her.
"Thanks, Joe," River responded with appreciation.
"I'm gonna go check on your sister. Man, the station," Joe said before he walked away.
As River continued her work, she couldn't help but roll her eyes with a smirk when Marcus strolled in, a wide grin on his face, skateboard in hand.
"What do you want?" she sighed playfully, attempting to hide her smile as Marcus approached the counter.
"Don't you mean, 'Welcome to Blue Farm Cafe. How may I help you?'" he replied with a somewhat forced innocent smile.
"Nope, I mean, 'What do you want?'" River retorted, mimicking his smile with a healthy dose of sarcasm.
"Service with a smile," he whispered suggestively, his words laced with humor.
River felt her cheeks flush as she whispered back, "I will physically hurt you," hoping Joe hadn't overheard their playful banter.
Marcus chuckled, "Grumpy gremlin," he whispered, scratching the back of his neck in an attempt to conceal his own blush before placing his order. "Iced coffee, black. No milk."
River smiled mischievously as she poured ice and coffee into a to-go cup. She maintained eye contact with him, her head tilted to the side, as she added a touch of milk, pouring it slowly to tease him.
Marcus couldn't help but laugh as he watched her, then reached out for the cup, their hands brushing against each other, the contact lingering for a moment. A shiver ran down River's spine before she released the cup, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.
"That will be three dollars," she said with a playful smile, trying to regain her composure. "And we don't take Venmo," she added with mock seriousness.
