"What?" Schlatt stared at Wilbur, confused. Why couldn't Wil- oh. The voices. He said they were very... persistent. "You can. They don't control you Will. They're not real. Take the pills." He handed the pills to Wilbur and stared him down. "Come on Wilbur. Take the pills."
Wilbur shook his head slightly and shrunk under Schlatt's stare. "I can't... They're so loud." He really wanted to take the pills, but he just couldn't. It was hard for him to even hear Schlatt. They just kept repeating the same sentence over and over and over again.
Don't take the pills.
His eyes were screwed shut, and Wilbur clenched his fist. His nails were digging into his palms as he tried to ignore the screaming voices. "They'll quiet down if you take the pills Wilbur. You need to take them." Schlatt's voice had ever so slightly changed. Not that Wilbur noticed. He was fighting his own battle.
But every time Schlatt repeated his demand, the soft, caring voice he started out with slipped away. It sounded more like an order than a request or suggestion. "You need these pills. Take them for me Wilbur. Listen to my voice and take the pills."
Wilbur shook his head again, not recognising the change in Schlatt's voice. "Schlatt I- I can't! It's so- they're just- I can't!" A tear slipped out from behind his closed eyes as his nails pressed into his skin. His palms were burning with pain, he was trying to distract himself. It wasn't working.
"Wilbur take the damn pills!" He shouted. That's what pulled Wilbur back into the real world. If Schlatt really cared, why would he yell? He would be consoling Wilbur, helping Wilbur. He wouldn't yell.
See, we told you so.
Look at the pills he was trying to give you. Those aren't our Wilbur.
I don't know what it is, but it isn't good.
"I- I'm sorry I didn't mean to yell. I'll out the pills in your water, that way you don't need to swallow the pills." Schlatt dropped the pills into Wilbur's water glass, and Wilbur watched them disintegrate. His pills didn't disintegrate in water. The water turned blue. His pills didn't turn water blue. What was Schlatt trying to give him?
Wilbur recognised what drug turned the water blue and held back a gasp. It was Rohyponl. He's had cases where the victim ingested this drug. They reported that they felt nauseous, too hot and too cold at the same time, dizzy, confused, and very disoriented. It was more commonly known as the date rape drug.
What the hell was Schlatt planning? "I- I have to go." Wilbur stood up in a panic and bolted out of the house. He had his phone and headphones in his coat pocket. That was all he brought. He had to have seen it wrong. It wasn't like the voices to warn him about something. Have they been trying to help him the entire time?
That's what we've been fucking trying to tell you!
We're only here to help! Imagine if we didn't warn you about the roofies.
Once Wilbur was a safe distance away from the house, he stopped running. He needed to get home to Tom. He needed to get out of here. He unlocked his phone and saw a missed call from the house phone.
He told Tom to call him from the house phone if he wasn't home and wrote his and Techno's number next to the phone. Why was Tom awake? It was around 3am. He quickly called the number back and prayed Tom would answer.
"Wilby? Is that you?" Tom had answered the phone quickly and spoke quietly into the phone. "Why aren't you home?"
Wilbur let out a sigh of relief when he head the kid's voice and visibly relaxed. He continued to walk and shook his head to himself. "Why aren't you asleep?" He knew he deflected the question, but he cared more about Tom.
