CHAPTER SIXTEEN,
boyfriend and girlfriend.

DUSTIN HENDERSON'S ARRIVAL CAME AS A SURPRISE TO SOLANA COLEMAN. She had no idea that he was already back from camp. Her reaction to his presence was nothing but bliss. She also feels ecstatic that he's taking time out of his day to visit her at her job. He's always been so kind.

The pair made conversation as Solana restocked some clothing racks, entirely engaged in what Dustin had to say. The young boy recalled his events at camp, while also mentioning his new relationship. "Wow. I still can't believe that you have a girlfriend." It wasn't the most shocking thing ever, it's just that everyone around her were in relationships. And she's just here—all alone. There's Mike and Eleven, Max and Lucas, Maelynn and Eddie (which is still kind of bizarre to her), Azella and Chance, and now, Dustin and Suzie. All of this romance was making her sick.

Why is she the odd one out?

"No, what I can't believe is that you and Steve are on the outs!" Dustin retorts.

    "Who told you that?"

Who else could've told him? "Steve!" Dustin exclaims, a little bit too loud for Solana's liking. She hushes him, telling him to keep his voice down. The Henderson boy continues speaking, with a lower voice this time around. "You guys were supposed to be together by now. Boyfriend and girlfriend, you know?"

His choice of titles resulted in Solana looking at him as if he's gone crazy. Boyfriend and girlfriend? "Well, Dustin. Welcome to the real world." Solana kept it short, not wanting to get into full details about her love life with a child. Because at the end of the day, he is still a child and he probably won't understand. Furthermore, Dustin is way too inquisitive. He would trick her into telling him the truth.

Dustin couldn't hide his disappointment. He never expected to come back home and everything was practically a disaster. During his visit to the mall, he went to the ice cream parlor to see if Steve got the job. The two of them chatted for awhile, with Steve serving Dustin with a banana boat of ice cream. Dustin's main purpose was not only to see his friend but to inform him about the code he intercepted.

"He didn't tell me what happened," Dustin reveals, curiosity seeping through. At first, Dustin was convinced that Steve was the problem. Maybe he did something. Currently, he isn't so sure. Maybe, it wasn't Steve. After getting to know the older boy, Dustin came to the conclusion that Steve is trying to figure out life like everyone else.

"Great," Solana replies, sarcasm laced in her tone. The topic at hand was making her feel uneasy. It's bad enough that Steve is constantly on her mind. Talking about him is just going to make things worse.
