The Day to Day

Despite two months having passed since that day, the kid remained unwavering in his commitment to visiting Macaque every week. Always arriving with new supplies to help soothe the injuries he has sustained and fill the empty belly Macaque always seemed to have right when MK appeared.

It was like the kid had an internal clock and just knew every time Macaque was getting hungry.

On each occasion, MK would always earnestly plead and entreat Macaque to join him for dinners or social gatherings. The situation was awkward, to say the least.

Macaque often felt like he didn't quite fit in, but MK's friends proved to be as accepting as he was. Unlike Macaque, they didn't hold onto grudges - a quality he wished he could emulate.

Nonetheless, he approached his role as MK's second Mentor with utmost dedication. He took it far more seriously than Wukong did; that much was certain. Macaque diligently prepared lesson plans and assigned exercises for MK to complete independently. This structured approach, combined with MK's inherent thirst for improvement, paved the way for effective learning.

Surprisingly, despite Wukong's initial reservations on how it would go, Macaque excelled at teaching. Macaque never imagined that working with children would be a good fit for him. But, he discovered that he truly enjoyed being an educator. The sense of fulfillment he experienced when MK mastered a concept was absolutely addictive.

It made the weight of his chest all the worse, though, the more he recalled how he had first met the Kid. The lies he spewed and the injuries he instilled. How rough he was when it came to MK's "training" when he was just using the kid for his revenge.

Although MK had technically forgiven him long ago, an unpleasant sensation lingered in Macaque's chest. He had messed up when it came to the kiddo, he knew. A lot of bad to someone who had never done anything wrong to him. All for the sake of some pathetic revenge on Wukong.

A revenge that was never going to happen. Wukong held back on him, always had. It took fighting the possessed and unhinged King to realize this.

So what was the point anymore? As much as he was hurt, he would never be able to get back at Wukong for what he had done. Wukong was and always will be, the untouchable Monkey King.

With that bitter thought, Macaque felt released. Some part of him was still bitter about it, but being able to clear his mind of the idea of revenge was freeing. He could focus on what his life would be from here on, which is something he hadn't considered until now.

He could do whatever he wanted. He could continue his Shadow play performances, see the world, and train MK into the best hero this world had ever seen.

...Truly earn the kid's forgiveness too.

The past only knows how those things come back with a vengeance if you don't deal with them as soon as possible. And the concept of MK looking at him with bitter anger was an idea Macaque didn't want to test.

So Macaque opted to help out in what way he could. Assisting the shop, fixing what he had broken, and even "hanging out" with MK from time to time. Playing video games, going shopping, getting lunch- it was awkward at first. Macaque didn't really have anything in common with the Kid- well, until MK showed him his drawings.

Now the two spent most of their time doodling together. MK had the style similar to Wukong's, while Macaque was more goofy-

Or no, MK didn't like when Macaque called his own style goofy. Macaque had a more 'stylized" style or however MK put it. It was fun though.

Macaque used to spend hours drawing with Wukong that this was a past time he hadn't allowed himself to divulge in for decades. Holding a pencil in his hands was something he didn't realize he missed.
