Chapter Six
Realizing that they had been talking for over two hours now and that Niall's nap is now also over two hours long, the group heads out to the living room where Niall is still dozing in her rocker. They each let out their own brief sad smiles directed at the comfy little. They hate knowing what she's been through but they're relieved to know that they're around now to keep her happy and safe. They take a moment before Kate reluctantly goes over and picks her up before slowly bouncing her on her hip as she tries to wake Niall up for some lunch and playtime. Niall fusses at the disruption and tries to push herself away only to wind up being pushed against Kate's chest to keep her from slipping out of her arms.
Once Niall is sufficiently calmed down, Kate wanders back into the kitchen with Clint, Pietro, Yelena, Wanda, and Natasha following behind as the rest get comfortable on the couches in the common room. On their way out, Maria lets the group know that Fury would be stopping by tonight at some point per Tony's request. Rather than placing her in the high chair, Kate instead settles into a chair at the table with Niall in her lap as Wanda insists on cooking for her little one and by default, the rest of the little group that followed them in here. Niall yawns as she settles into Kate's lap only to be jostled awake as Kate bounces her again. Niall groans as she shoots Kate an attempted glare only to have Natasha and Yelena coo over the attempt and pinch her cheeks before dropping a kiss. Niall groans again before going back to hide in Kate's neck. "Nialler, you gotta stop with the squirming little one before I drop you. You don't want me to drop you or have to put you in your high chair, do you?" Kate questions while readjusting Niall so she is facing everyone now. Niall giggles seeing Yelena trying to sneak up behind Wanda, no doubt trying to get some hot sauce in the Mac and cheese she is currently cooking on the stove. The giggle attracts the attention of everyone in the room, including Wanda, who turned around just to see Yelena right behind her with a bottle of hot sauce that she is trying yet failing miserably at hiding in her clothes. Wanda raises an eyebrow at Yelena as she gives her a sheepish smile back and smacks the bottle into Wanda's waiting hand. "Yelena, we've been over this. If anyone wants hot sauce in their Mac and cheese then they'll add some. Niall is too little for hot sauce and she needs to eat too." Wanda explains with a sigh going over the same thing they had at least once a week for the past month. "How do we know that though? For all we know, she could love it. Like mother like daughter." Yelena explains with a cheesy grin as she reaches for the hot sauce Wanda had confiscated. "I don't care. Until she can consciously make that decision for herself, no hot sauce for the baby." Wanda explains with a pointed glare as Yelena slouches off towards Niall.
Within minutes, Wanda has all the food plated for the others, yet holds onto Niall's not quite trusting Yelena with it at the moment. She winds up handing it over to Clint as Niall remains in Kate's lap so she can eat. She ends up pulling a disgusted face along with Pietro and Natasha as she watches Yelena dump half the hot sauce bottle over her pasta before turning back to watch Niall. Everything goes well until Niall deems herself full and refuses to eat any more. Looking at the bowl, there's almost three quarters of it left which they know will not help get Niall up to a healthy weight. "Baby, do you think you can have just a few more bites? Maybe get through half? If you do, I'm sure I can convince the rest of your mommies and daddies to allow you an extra scoop of ice cream with sprinkles and whipped cream for dessert?" Clint tries to bribe her. Niall looks back and forth between the spoonful of pasta in front of her and her mommies and daddies a few times before finally opening her mouth. They all sigh in relief as she does so and although it's much more sugar than they'd like in their little one, they can't help but let it go just this once to make sure she eats. Rather than just finishing half, Niall actually ends up eating almost the whole bowl with the exception of a couple spoonfuls. "Good job baby, you definitely deserve that ice cream now! Nat exclaims happily while picking Niall up and swaying with her on her hip. "Although it looks like you got half of it on your face and how did you get it in your hair? Wasn't daddy Clint feeding you, how did you get so messy, you're just my silly cheesy little baby, aren't you? Nat tries to figure out and teases as she uses napkins to try to clean as much cheese off of Niall as possible. Nat makes her way into the common room after giving up with the napkins. "Can one of you help give Niall a bath? Half her lunch is on her face and I need to finish up some paperwork before Fury gets here, Yelena will help since she is in need of her own bath apparently." Nat explains as she catches sight of Yelena and includes her on the mission. Yelena narrows her eyes in a glare at her sister's comment as Maria pipes up to help give Niall a bath. "C'mere baby, lets get you all nice and clean so you can snuggle with mommy Ria. Maybe mommy Lena will even play with you if you ask nicely." Maria soothes as she takes the squirmy little from Nat. Niall looks excitedly at Yelena who sighs before giving in under Niall's hopeful gaze. Yelena trudges off to her room to change into a bathing suit before meeting the other two in the bathroom.
Once she gets to the bathroom, she walks into Niall already floating around the ridiculously large tub with a drenched Maria holding her upright. Niall squeals in excitement after finally laying her eyes on her mommy Lena and starts making grabby hands to get her over there faster. Yelena chuckles at the adorable mess that she calls her little one and makes her way over to the tub with a few toys for Niall. She dumps the toys before stepping in herself and pulling Niall to sit in her lap so Maria can finally let her go. Maria sighs at the relief and prepares a wash rag while Yelena distracts her with some of the toys she brought with her for Niall. Thanks to the toys and Yelena's distractions, Maria was able to have Niall done with her bath within ten minutes and dressed in five. After getting Niall settled, Maria brings her to the pack room where the rest of them are currently waiting for them with what seems to be Monsters Inc. on the tv. Maria moves to get comfortable in the middle with Niall resting on her chest. As soon as Maria and Niall stop moving and adjusting themselves, Tony slides up next to them and lays a hand on Niall's back with Pepper moving into their other side quickly after. Multiple groans are heard from the others as the spots are taken before they can get there while Tony and Pepper smirk and continue playing with Niall's hair and rubbing her back. Before long, Niall has fallen back to sleep and the team is being alerted to Fury's arrival at the tower. They slowly maneuvered themselves out of the bed while Steve directs Friday to lead Fury to the conference room and summon Sam to keep an eye on Niall just in case she wakes up while they're talking to Fury. As soon as Sam shows up, they each give Niall a kiss on her head before heading off to the conference room. The group prepares themselves for the most likely bad influx of information they are about to receive regarding the most important person in their lives. As they reach the door, they let Steve take the lead knowing he can keep his composure a little better in situations like these.
The avengers open the door to find Fury the only one in the room with his back to them and helping himself to a drink from Tony's bar. Before any of them can say anything to them, Fury instead begins the conversation. "So would one of you like to help me understand exactly why I had to rearrange my entire afternoon schedule to drop everything and come here?" Fury begins with barely concealed rage while turning to the group. Tony begins to open his mouth, no doubt to rip him to shreds with his snark before being stopped by Steve who shoots him a look and begins to speak himself. "You have some important information we need." He begins and continues at Fury's eyebrow raise. "We are engaging in a trial period with Niall as our little and imagine our surprise at all the bad news we got after her check up, especially after we went to her file for some answers only to find that essentially everything had been redacted, by you no less, and you're the only one who now has this information or any access to it." Steve continues with his own fire burning behind his eyes as they all move to take a seat around the table leaving Fury the only one standing. "I'm sorry but I cannot release that information without strict approval from Ms. Spencer herself. She was the one who requested everything be classified." Fury explained. He watched as their expressions turned darker and briefly worried for not only his own safety but theirs as well. This relationship did not seem healthy, nor did he recognize the people surrounding him right now. "This is not a negotiation. She is our little, we are her caregivers. We are just as entitled to that information as you are, if not more." Steve gritted through a clenched jaw. "Until you can provide me with the legal documents regarding her adoption and new role within your pack, I will not be releasing anything without her explicit instruction." Fury held his ground despite his internal worrying. This was evidently the wrong answer as before he could blink he was restrained by red magic as his air flow was mildly disrupted. Steve got up and got in close to his face. "You may think you're in charge but when you think about it, we're the one with the real power in this situation... literally. Now you're going to give us her file unredacted or you can consider the avengers not only retired but a potential land mine, one wrong moved and you disappear while chaos covers the rest. Remember this the next time we ask for you as well." The rest of the team smirked behind him as Fury gasped for breath in front of them. He nodded quickly as he slumped in his seat regaining his breath. These are not his avengers. They watched him declassify the file before letting him go, smirking at each other as he does so. Whilst Fury goes back to SHIELD to reevaluate any relationship with the current avengers, the avengers themselves indulge in Niall's file as they come up with their next course of action. There's no way they're letting her slip through their fingers now that they have her. Fury is baffled by who the avengers have become. He knows Niall isn't safe. He also knows that getting her away form them would be one of the toughest missions he would partake in, especially without his best agents and against a group of highly trained, super-powered individuals. They have become obsessed and possessive and impossible to say no to and all because Niall finally let herself trust them and Fury knows this is becoming an impossible situation. Fury slumps behind his desk as he continues going over notes and plans until the sun comes up and even then, he is still not solid on any of his plans or ideas. He takes a step back and decided to reevaluate after some food and sleep. Rather than going home that night, he retires to his safe house with his soulmate, knowing the avengers can't be trusted right now if ever again.
